Please welcome Debbie Mason to Book Reviews & More by Kathy.
Kathy: Thank you so much for chatting with us today. Can you tell us a little about your new release, Sandpiper Shore?
Ms. Mason: Thanks so much for having me, Kathy. I’d love to tell you a little about Sandpiper Shore. I think of Logan Gallagher and Jenna Bell’s story as Cinderella meets The Wedding Planner. When the man Jenna thought was her Prince Charming dumps her a week before their wedding in the middle of her dress fitting, Jenna runs from her stepsister’s bridal shop onto a busy street. Lucky for her, secret service agent Logan Gallagher happens to be walking by and saves her from becoming roadkill. And when her now ex-fiancé and her stepmother turn Jenna’s world upside down, leaving her homeless and penniless, Logan gets her a job working for his family as Greystone Manor’s wedding planner. But in a matter of weeks Jenna’s dream job becomes a nightmare when she discovers she’s planning Logan’s wedding—a man who she’s come to think might be her one true love.
Kathy: What was your greatest challenge while writing Sandpiper Shore?
Ms. Mason: Jenna has a rare form of color blindness called tritanopia. She can’t distinguish between blue and green and everything takes on a pink hue. I didn’t want to describe things as she saw them because it might be confusing, so, for the most part, when I was in Jenna’s POV, I didn’t use color in my description. It’s more difficult than it sounds. Though I didn’t really discover how big a challenge it had been until I began writing her stepsister Arianna’s story, The Corner of Holly and Ivy. It was so freeing to write in color again.
Kathy: What do you think Jenna Bell’s and Logan Gallagher’s best trait is? What would you consider to be their worst?
Ms. Mason: I think like most people, Jenna’s and Logan’s best traits are also their worst. Jenna only sees the good in people, which is a lovely trait but it also means she’s overly idealistic and can be easily fooled and hurt. Logan is brave and protective, which sometimes leads to him being overly protective and trying to control people and situations.
Kathy: Sandpiper Shore is part of the Harmony Harbor series. When you begin writing a new series, do you know which hero and heroine will star in each book? Or do each of novels grow organically from the previous installments?
Ms. Mason: When I begin to write a new series I pretty much know who the hero and heroine will be for books one through four. After that, it’s usually someone who has played a strong secondary role in a previous book and demands to have their story told.
Kathy: Do you work from an outline while writing your novels? How closely do the finished novels fit your original vision of the characters and storyline before you begin writing?
Ms. Mason: I work from an outline, but once I begin writing the book, the characters take over. Still, the finished novel ends up being very close to how I envisioned it. Probably because I know my characters pretty well before I begin writing their story.
Kathy: What project(s) are you currently working on?
Ms. Mason: I’m currently writing book 8 in the Harmony Harbor series, Barefoot Beach. It’s firefighter Marco DiRossi (a fan favorite from the first book in the series) and pilot Theia Lawson’s story. Theia is introduced in The Corner of Holly and Ivy and, like most people in Harmony Harbor, she has a secret.
Kathy: Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions! Hope you drop by and visit with us soon!
Ms. Mason: I’d love to! Thanks again for having me.
