March’s Reading Challenge is to read a book based on true life events. The book can be a fictionalized account or a non-fiction book.
My first selection is a book I purchased late last year. Last October, my husband and I went on vacation in South Carolina where we spent a day at the Magnolia Plantation. During the tour, our guide mention The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd is based on Sarah Grimke, who is related to the original owners of the plantation. I’ve enjoyed other novels by Ms. Kidd so I knew I had to read this important piece of American history.

My second selection is a book I purchased a few years ago. It, too, is a fictionalized account of true events. Splinters by Ben Patrick Johnson follows a young man’s troubled journey from West Virginia to Hollywood. I am very eager to see how Gerald finally begins his path to sobriety.

Here are a couple of resources to help find a novel for this month’s challenge: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/11018.Best_Books_Based_On_A_True_Story, https://www.bustle.com/articles/124124-11-novels-you-never-knew-were-based-on-incredible-true-stories & https://www.popsugar.com/entertainment/Novels-Based-True-Stories-45479760. You can also google books based on true stories.
I didn’t have as much luck finding LGBT novels based on true life but I did find Boy Erased. There is also a movie based on the novel out now.
We’ll check back in next month and see if you met your challenge and whether or not you enjoyed your selection!
Happy Reading!
If you participated in last month’s challenge, check out the discussion post HERE and let us know if you met your challenge!
At the moment I am going with a reread of The Night He Left by Sue Lawrence, fiction based around the Tay Bridge disaster. If I can find a new read that fits, may do that instead!!
I have this book in my TBR! So now I’m excited to see what you think about it.
I just read Call the Nurse: True Stories of a Country Nurse on a Scottish Isle by Mary J. MacLeod. It was so good I ordered her next book as soon as I finished that one! If you’re a fan of James Herriot, you’ll like these.
Thanks, Liz! I’ll have to check it out.
