Giant Sky Kangaroos
In this excerpt, Aidan and Nassim have just shared a rather terrible day at work, followed by Nassim’s brother coming to the office to convince Nassim to come to a family gathering…and to bring Aidan along. Aidan isn’t quite sure what he’s gotten himself into…

If Aidan thought Nassim would be more forthcoming when they got to the car, that quickly proved to not be the case. Nassim remained silent, and Aidan discovered he had an imagination that would fill in the blanks when confronted with the unknown.
Something to add to his list of Aidan-isms.
He wondered if the gathering was a secret thing. Would he have to sign an agreement not to share what he saw? Or maybe it wouldn’t be quite so formal. Maybe just a verbal warning—a threat. He wasn’t sure where he got the idea Nassim’s family would be growly and threatening, since Fazl had assured Aidan of his welcome, but it was one he couldn’t shake.
Finally, about forty minutes west of Kanata, Aidan couldn’t take it anymore.
“Are you going to tell me anything about this, or am I supposed to guess?”
“Hmm?” Nassim glanced at Aidan and did a double take, clearly taking in the lines Aidan could feel etched around his mouth and across his forehead. Nassim seemed to deflate. “Merry gods, I’m sorry.”
Well, that was a start. “For keeping me in the dark, or for the whole day?”
Nassim opened his mouth, closed it, and gave Aidan an assessing look. “I do owe you an apology for earlier, don’t I?”
“Today was not a pleasant day,” Aidan agreed. “I know shit hit the fan this morning, but—”
“But I should have handled it better.” He rested his hand on Aidan’s knee, and Aidan barely had time to register how hot Nassim’s skin was, how much he liked the touch, and how weird it was before Nassim jerked his hand away. “Sorry. I, uh….” He cleared his throat. “If it’s any consolation, we don’t have days like that often.”
Aidan resisted the urge to tug Nassim’s hand back to rest on his leg and instead concentrated on the view outside the windshield. “How about never again?”
“I’ll do my best.”
It would have to do. “So what’s this thing we’re going to?”
“My sister’s eard al’usra.” The odd-sounding phrase tripped easily off Nassim’s lips, but then he frowned. “Humans have no equivalent. It’s the first presentation of her child to family.”
Aidan’s brows rose. “Are you sure it’s okay that I come with you?”
“It’s fine. You’ll need to stay in the house as we witness the birth of her shab and its progression to her pouch, but after—”
“Wait.” Aidan shifted in his seat so he was facing Nassim. “I think I need a quick biology lesson.”
Nassim twisted his lips and kept his eyes on the road. “This is not my favorite topic.”
“You’re bringing me to this… this airdal—”
“Eard al’usra.”
“So the least you can do is tell me what to expect.”
Nassim was silent for a moment, long enough for Aidan to wonder if he was going to explain at all. Then he said, “Dragons give birth to live young.”
“I thought dragons laid eggs?”
“A common misconception. That’s gryphons.”
“Huh. Okay, so, live young.” Something Nassim had said a moment ago clicked into place. “Wait—a pouch? Are you telling me dragons are like kangaroos?”
“This is why I despise this topic.” Nassim groaned and glared at Aidan. “We are not marsupials. We share some characteristics with them. That’s all.”
“Giant sky kangaroos.” Aidan nodded smugly.
“May I remind you I breathe fire.”
“Giant sky kangaroos who breathe fire.”
Nassim growled.
Aidan grinned. “You won’t set me on fire.”
“No.” Nassim huffed. “The smell is terrible.”
I don’t want to think about how he knows that.
