October Reading Challenge Discussion

October’s Reading Challenge was to read a novel set on an island or with “island” in the title.

I selected The Last Time We Spoke by Fiona Sussman which is set in New Zealand. I am excited to announce I half-way completed this month’s challenge! I have read about half of the novel and I can’t wait to finish it.

So far, The Last Time We Spoke is a poignant read that is captivating (I’m not done with it because of a time crunch NOT because of the book itself). The characters are well-drawn and the storyline tugs on the heartstrings. My feelings for the characters continue to change and I am very curious how everything will turn out for them in the end. Hopefully I’ll finish reading it soon.

I read Dearest Milton James by NR Walker, set in Sydney Australia.
The story itself was was lovely and quite joyous to see Malachi become accepted in the little band of misfits and to see Julian come out of his funk.
Didn’t disappoint, though in terms set on an Island, I was stretching the point I think as there wasn’t much sense of place for Australia let alone islands!!!

Yay. I’m glad you liked the book.

I should have mentioned in my short review that the Māori culture is part of the storyline. I like how this part of the novel is written.
