I lean forward and take a deep breath through my nose of the sweet smell of peaches, strawberry, and a hint of coconut. Her hair is intoxicating. Simone pauses whatever she was writing and looks sideways at me.

I still.

Shit, did she realize I was sniffing her?

Her brow rises, questioning if I was doing what she thought I was doing.

I shrug and sit up.  

Does she still squirm when she’s tickled?

I reach forward and tickle her ribs. Simone falls back on the bed. Her voice screeches as she giggles, her body wiggling like a worm underneath me.

“Stop, Ryan… Oh, my gosh… Stop.” She slaps me on the back.

Hovering above her, I continue tickling her sides and stomach.

“I can’t… Ryan…” she says through laughter, thrashing around, water running out of her eyes.

This feels good; this feels familiar, like old times.

My bedroom door swings open, and Mom walks in uninvited. One of her events must have canceled, or maybe she is on her way out. She stands in the doorway looking like a Stepford wife clone dressed in a wide leg navy pant suit, her sun-kissed hair twisted up in her classic bun. Her face is tight from the copious amounts of fillers.

“What’s going on in here?”
