August’s Reading Challenge Discussion

August’s Reading Challenge was to read a novel in a newly discovered series.

I finally decided to start reading Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series in July so I selected the 6th book in the series, Thin Air, for the challenge. The books are very different than the Shetland TV series which I have absolutely loved from the very first episode I watched. But I can now say the books in Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series are as fabulous and I am so thrilled I finally read them.

The mystery I selected for the challenge is Thin Air, the sixth book in the series. The mystery takes place on Unst, the farthest north island in Shetland. As always, the setting is atmospheric and in Ann Cleeves’ very talented hands, the locale and people are vibrantly life-like. The mystery is well-executed and quite clever. The main characters continue to evolve and grow whil the secondary charcters are quite colorful and add depth to the story. The dialogue is well-written with quite unique (and interesting) words and phrases (soothmoothers is a personal favorite of mine!). The perpetrator’s identity is held closely under wraps until the mystery’s conclusion.

I recently finished the final mystery in the series and I am so sad to say good-bye to Jimmy Perez, Sandy Wilson and the Shetland Islands.

I read Twelve Days of Murder by Jason Wrench – murder mysteries being a favourite genre, the premise of someone killing people over the 12 days sounded good. The mystery, especially with the fingerprint cards, did make me feel if we ever going to get ahead of the game.
Frank is especially good as the tortured hero, after Andy’s death.
Aaron is a bit of a poor little rich boy who is also a bit nerdy.
At times I felt it was a bit teachy rather than organic story growth.
The romance was more of stop/start/stop – with little tension, so the end felt a bit rushed.
Overall liked, and will get book 2

Happy to hear you enjoyed the book. Jason Wrench is a new to me author so it’s great to hear positive feedback.

I finally started reading the Wait for Me series by Kris Jacen. Kris is or was married to someone in the military, so the books have an element of truth to them. I could feel myself in that environment.

I hope you’re enjoying the series. I do love a realistic military novel since my husband was in the air force for 26 years. Kris’s books are definitely authentic!
