Excerpt
“Let me at least take you to my place so you can rest.” It’s five to eight and I’m supposed to be opening up. I glance at the shuttered window and contemplate my options. “You hungry?”
He looks up at me with the first non-pained expression I’ve seen and I can’t help the small smile that lights my face. “Cinnamon sugar, right?” I ask.
He nods then quickly turns away. “Um, actually, no, thanks. I’m fine.”
My hands want to pull him to my chest and hold him, protecting him from any bad that might even think of coming to him. But I keep my distance. Giving him space to get comfortable with me. “You are not fine and you’re going to eat while we wait for someone to cover for me.”
His face turns red enough to camouflage the bruises. “I don’t have any money,” he whispers, barely loud enough for me to hear.
That asshole put him out on the street beat up and penniless. We’ll definitely be having words very soon.
I kneel down and wait for him to meet my gaze. “Your money isn’t good here anyway. This is on me.”
“Okay.” His tiny voice is full of shame. Again, I want to reach out to him but I don’t want to scare him away. I have to be careful with this one…and careful isn’t something I’m good at.
“Okay.” I stand up and start mixing the batter while I call Rachel. She answers on the second ring but she sounds sleepy. Fortunately, she doesn’t have her daughter but she has to cancel a hair appointment. I promise to pay for her highlights if she’ll work the whole day. As usual, she’s willing to help when I need her.
