June Reading Challenge Discussion

June’s Reading Challenge was to read a novel with a “new beginning” or starting over theme.

I selected Linwood Barclay’s Take Your Breath Away which is an outstanding mystery.

Andrew Mason’s wife Brie went missing while he was away on a fishing trip with his best friend and business partner Greg Raymus. Despite no evidence Andrew is involved with Brie’s disappearance, Detective Marissa Hardy tries her best to find something to tie him to whatever happened to his wife.

After hitting rock bottom, Andrew has turned his life around and now six years later, he is in a new relationship. When sightings of someone presumed to be Brie begin, Andrew is once again under the microscope and Detective Hardy has more questions for him. Will either of them get the bottom of whether or not Brie is truly back? And if so, where has she been for the past several years?

Take Your Breath Away is a fast-paced and engaging mystery that has several twists. Interesting family dynamics add another layer to an already puzzling story. The characters are three dimensional and their reactions to the current circumstances ring true. With devious turns, Linwood Barclay brings this clever mystery to an edge of the seat conclusion.

I also read another new release by Linwood Barclay. Look Both Ways is mystery in which autonomous cars run amuck on a small island. While I don’t read much sci-fi, I do enjoy techno mysteries/thrillers. I absolytely loved Look Both Ways and highly recommend it!

I read How to Save a Life by SD Robertson which I enjoyed. Despite the traumatic theme, it was quite uplifting and showed you can change things by having a more positive outlook
