Book Talk: What have you been reading lately?

Welcome to this week’s Book Talk!

Last week was a slow week for reading for me. In a strange twist, both books have main characters named Kate!

Lovely Girls by Margot Hunt: 4.5 stars. An outstanding domestic mystery with an interesting storyline. Newly widowed Kate and her daughter Alex have recently moved to a coastal Florida town following the death of her husband. While Kate is immediately accepted into a group of friends who are the queen bees in town, Alex immediately finds herself on the wrong side of their daughters. The more Kate gets to know the three women, the more uneasy she becomes. She is also struggling to salvage her tense relationship with Alex is not at all happy about their move.

The chapters alternate between Kate’s perspective and Alex’s video diary. This narration adds suspense to the storyline as Alex recounts the bullying she is enduring. Kate’s chapters are a little heartbreaking as she continues trying to reach Alex. She overlooks unpleasant traits in her new friends but will she finally listen to other people’s warnings about them?

Lovely Girls is a fast-paced domestic mystery. Although Kate and Alex are sympathetic characters, the trio of moms and their daugthers are impossible to like. The storyline is engaging and keeps readers guessing how this terrific mystery is going to end.

Code 6 by James Grippando: 4 stars. A sometimes hard to follow novel that explores a darker side of internet usage. It provides fascianting information about the 1st census and how even back then, techology can used for evil. The characters are well-drawn and the storyline is engrossing once the various plots and subplots begin to come together. The conclusion is action-packed with electrifying scenes that keep the pages turning at a breathless pace.

I started reading Dark Towers by David Enrich. It is a compelling investigative book that deleves into the history of Deutsche Bank. Very eye-opening!

  1. Katherine

I read Unrivaled by AshlynKane and Morgan James, won here on a Wednesday ebook contest. Thank you!

I could feel for both characters. Grady was burned in the past by teammates he thought were friends. Max is getting burned out on the role assigned to him. The relationship moves from hate-sex to friendship and more. When Grady almost smiled, it is significant.

Several authors have a hockey team named Vancouver Orcas. I’m wondering how this is related to the Vancouver Orcas team which gives space for children with autism to play ice hockey.

I am simultaneously listening to Librarian Spy. It is difficult to hear of the deprivation and cruelties in WWII.

My next reading will be Game Plan by Amy Aisling. More hockey!

I’m interested to hear your thoughts on Librarian Spy. And what you think of Game Plan!

Again, I really need to get to reading the Hockey Ever After series!
