August Reading Challenge Discussion

August’s Reading Challenge was to read a book from a bestseller list.

I read Debbie Macomber’s The Best Is Yet to Come. I absolutely loved this sweet novel of healing and love. The war in Afghanistan leaves scars on both Hope and Cade although they are for very different reasons. Since Hope is a high school teacher, there is an intriguing story arc featuring two of her students. A traumatized dog also has a starring role in this heartwarming story. Although this wonderful novel is the third installment in the Oceanside series, it can be read as a standalone.

I read Elin Hilderbrand’s latest, “The Five-Star Weekend,” and Ann Patchett’s “Tom Lake.” They were both excellent!

Hollis, the focus of Hilderbrand’s story, brought together women from different portions of her life as a way to get over the unexpected death of her husband. There were many twists and turns as Hollis and her friends worked their way through memories and the impact of current events. It was excellent – perhaps my favorite of Elin’s last few works.

Ann Patchett presents the story of a family of Northern Michigan fruit farmers. We learn of the past life of mom Lara as well as tells the story of her past life as an actor. The narrative moves between Lara’s story and present-day considerations of the world and how the past impacts it. Excellent!
