From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Behind Every Lie and The Night Olivia Fell comes an unforgettable and heart-wrenching novel about the lengths one woman will go to save her son.

Emma loves her life. She’s the mother of a precocious kindergartener, married to her soulmate—a loyal and loving police detective—and has a rewarding career as a doctor at the local hospital.

But everything comes crashing down when her son, Josh, is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

Determined to save him, Emma makes the risky decision to sell opioids to fund the life-saving treatment he needs. But when somebody ends up dead, a lethal game of cat and mouse ensues, her own husband leading the chase. With her son’s life hanging in the balance, Emma is dragged into the dark world of drugs, lies, and murder. Will the truth catch up to her before she can save Josh?

A timely and moving exploration of a town gripped by the opioid epidemic, and featuring Christina McDonald’s signature “complex, emotionally intense” (Publishers Weekly) prose, Do No Harm examines whether the ends ever justify the means…even for a desperate mother.

Review:

Do No Harm by Christina McDonald is a fast-paced, suspense-laden mystery.

Dr. Emma Sweeney is happily married to her police detective husband, Nate. They have one son, five year old Josh. Their world is completely turned upside down when Josh is diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of leukemia. Emma feels very lucky to discover an old family friend, Dr. Harmon, is now on staff. He recommends a treatment that has an extremely high success rate. However, Emma finds out it comes with a hefty price tag that has to be paid before the procedure is performed. Neither Emma nor Nate bring home big paychecks and she is still repaying her college loans. But with their son’s life on the line, is there anything Emma will not do to get the money for the treatment he needs?

Emma is good at compartmentalizing. She and her brother Ben were orphaned after their parents died in a car accident. They managed to go to the same foster home but their paths diverged when she stayed focused on her education and Ben turned to drugs. Due to his ongoing drug addiction, Emma has not seen her brother for several years. She has also kept a lot of this information from Nate.

Nate is a detective with their small-town police department. He is deeply in love with Emma and like her, he will do anything to save Josh. So, he makes the decision to continue working on his current murder investigation in hopes of securing a promotion. Nate is working on the murder investigation of local Santiago Martinez. His murder is unusual but seems linked to the recent rise of oxycontin overdoses in town. Then another suspected murder takes the investigation in a turn that hits a little too close to home.

Emma will literally do anything to find the money to save Josh. She makes a fateful choice that unexpectedly provides a different viewpoint about the impact the opioid epidemic has on how doctors treat their patients’ pain. Emma also finds herself facing people from her past that she would much rather not have anything to do with. But she is desperate enough to take any risk or deal with anyone in her attempt to save her son.

Do No Harm is a multi-layered mystery with an intriguing moral question. All of the characters are richly developed with relatable foibles. The storyline is engaging, filled with suspense and moves at a break-neck speed. With stunning twists and jaw-dropping turns, Christina McDonald brings this clever mystery to a poignant conclusion. Highly recommend to fans of the genre.

Summary:

If you can’t remember it, how do you prove you didn’t do it?

Eva Hansen wakes in the hospital after being struck by lightning and discovers her mother, Kat, has been murdered. Eva was found unconscious down the street. She can’t remember what happened but the police are highly suspicious of her.

Determined to clear her name, Eva heads from Seattle to London—Kat’s former home—for answers. But as she unravels her mother’s carefully held secrets, Eva soon realizes that someone doesn’t want her to know the truth. And with violent memories beginning to emerge, Eva doesn’t know who to trust. Least of all herself.

Told in alternating perspectives from Eva’s search for answers and Kat’s mysterious past, Christina McDonald has crafted another “complex, emotionally intense” (Publishers Weekly) domestic thriller. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell’s I Found You and Karin Slaughter’s Pieces of HerBehind Every Lie explores the complicated nature of mother-daughter relationships, family trauma, and the danger behind long-held secrets.

Review:

Behind Every Lie by Christina McDonald is a twist-filled domestic mystery.

After being struck by lightning, Eva Hansen awakens in the hospital with few memories of the evening before. Needless to say she is very distraught to learn her mother Kat has been murdered.  Even more disconcerting is the discovery that Detective Kent Jackson believes that Eva is involved with her mother’s  murder.  With an overwhelming sense of fear, Kat insists on leaving the hospital to return the secluded home she shares with  fiancé Laim Sullivan. Unnerved by her wispy, unformed memories that place her at Kat’s house the night of the murder, Eva uncovers disquieting information about her mother’s past. With the help of her childhood friend, Jacob Quinn, she flies to London where she hopes to find answers.  Will the information she unearths lead to the identity of Kat’s killer? Or will Eva put herself more solidly in the crosshairs of someone who wants her permanently out of the way?

Eva is in her late twenties and events from her past leave her doubting herself. She is happily engaged to Liam but she is still keeping secrets from him. Although Eva loves Kat, their relationship is rocky due to her mother’s emotional distance and her tough love attitude toward her daughter. Eva’s inability to trust herself reaches a crisis point as she tries to put the new information about her mom’s past into context. And in the midst of searching for answers, Eva cannot shake the eerie sensation that someone is watching.

Kat’s past is revealed through chapters which alternate with present day events. Beginning twenty-five years earlier,  a chance encounter sets Kat on a shocking path that culminates with tragedy in the present.  As Eva pieces together the stunning pieces of her mother’s past, will her fragmented memories of the night of Kat’s murder snap into place? Is Eva fully prepared for the appalling truth when and if her memories return?

Behind Every Lie is an incredibly riveting mystery with a clever plot and unreliable protagonist.  Eva is a sympathetic character who finds unexpected inner strength as she searches for answers about herself, her mom and Kat’s murder.  The storyline is engaging and despite a few easy to figure out elements,  Christina McDonald saves some jaw-dropping revelations for the novel’s dramatic and  action-packed dénouement.  I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this engrossing mystery to readers of the genre.

With flashbacks of Olivia’s own resolve to uncover family secrets, this taut and emotional novel asks: how well do you know your children? And how well do they know you?

Review:

The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald is an emotional, poignant and compelling domestic mystery.

Abigail “Abi” Knight knows right away an early morning phone call brings nothing but bad news.  But she has no idea just how tragically heartbreaking the news awaiting her at the hospital is going to be. Her beloved, only daughter, seventeen year old Olivia, is brain dead yet due to Washington laws, she has to remain on life support until she gives birth. Abi is stunned by this shocking detail because she had no idea Olivia is pregnant. Even more  upsetting is the realization that the police are not investigating her daughter’s late night fall from a bridge. Abi wants to know who is responsible for hurting her daughter and she absolutely refuses to stop searching until she learns the  painful truth.

Abi is an extremely over-protective mother who clings tightly to Olivia. She works hard and willingly makes whatever sacrifices necessary for her daughter’s future. Abi holds herself back from friendships and she does not date. She is also very tight-lipped about the identity of Olivia’s father and no one, including her older sister, Sarah, knows who he is.

Up until the past several months, Olivia has never pushed back on Abi’s smothering concern and stringent rules.  But after she decides to learn the truth about her father, she asserts herself much to her mother’s dismay. Olivia is also going  through changes in her personal life but her well-intentioned choice to protect someone close to her makes her feel guilty.  Olivia is withholding important information from Abi but does this have anything to do with her fall?

Due to her difficult childhood, Abi knows how difficult it is to live without answers about life-altering events.  So, when it comes to Olivia’s fall, she refuses to let police inaction stop her from unearthing the truth. During the course of investigation, she is dismayed and hurt as she discovers what Olivia was doing in the previous months. However, as she tries to untangle her daughter’s life, she learns a valuable lesson about accepting help and allowing herself to trust the people in her orbit.

Written from Abi’s perspective in the present and Olivia’s point of view in the months preceding her fall, The Night Olivia Fell is an absolutely riveting mystery. With a complex and multi-dimensional storyline and well-rounded characters, the novel  captures readers’ attention right from the first page.  Abi is an incredibly sympathetic character who sometimes thinks before she acts. Olivia is a normal teenager who wants to learn the truth about her father, but she discovers far too late that she is in over her head.  With a stunning array of twists and heart-wrenching turns, the truth about who harmed Olivia and why is revealed in a during a shocking confrontation.

Keep the tissues handy because Christina McDonald’s will bring readers to tears as this emotional debut comes a deeply moving conclusion.
