Summary:

A family’s loyalty is put to the ultimate test

Kirsten Hammarstrom hasn’t been home to her tiny corner of rural Wisconsin in years—not since the mysterious disappearance of a local teenage girl rocked the town and shattered her family. Kirsten was just nine years old when Stacy Lemke went missing, and the last person to see her alive was her boyfriend, Johnny—the high school wrestling star and Kirsten’s older brother. No one knows what to believe—not even those closest to Johnny—but the event unhinges the quiet farming community and pins Kirsten’s family beneath the crushing weight of suspicion.

Now, years later, a new tragedy forces Kirsten and her siblings to return home, where they must confront the devastating event that shifted the trajectory of their lives. Tautly written and beautifully evocative, The Mourning Hours is a gripping portrayal of a family straining against extraordinary pressure, and a powerful tale of loyalty, betrayal and forgiveness.

The Review:

The Mourning Hours is a riveting page turner by new author Paula Treick DeBoard. This well-written and suspenseful mystery is a fascinating character study that takes readers deep into the heart of small town rural America following the disappearance of teenager Stacy Lemke.

Kirsten Hammarstrom is nine years old when her brother’s girlfriend disappears one snowy night. As days pass with no new leads, suspicion quickly falls on Johnny. Support from friends and members of their small community quickly disappears and the court of public opinion brands Johnny a killer. The Hammarstrom family is caught in the fallout as they support Johnny, but their own doubts about his innocence stretch this once solid family to the breaking point.

Told in first person from Kirsten’s point of view, most of The Mourning Hours details Johnny and Kirsten’s romance from their first meeting through the aftermath of her disappearance. Kirsten is mature for her age, keenly observant and although she does not always understand the significance of certain events, she is a reliable narrator. Kirsten is enamored of the elegant and well to do Stacy and she is a strong supporter of Stacy and Johnny’s budding romance. But as tension begins to grow between Johnny and his parents over Stacy’s possessiveness, Kirsten begins to have misgivings about Johnny’s involvement with Stacy. Kirsten witnesses some unsettling moments between Stacy and Johnny that will later cause her to doubt Johnny’s innocence after Stacy vanishes.

The Hammarstroms are a close knit family before Stacy enters their life. Their life on the family dairy farm is idyllic and they are well-liked by their neighbors and fellow townspeople. Cracks begin to appear within the family during Johnny’s romance and in the aftermath of Stacy’s disappearance, the stress of the investigation takes a huge toll on this once solid family. Their communities’ indictment of Johnny further strains the Hammarstroms’ marriage and the family is virtually ostracized as the search for Stacy continues.

The Mourning Hours is an engrossing read that is impossible to put down. While not a typical mystery, I had my suspicions as to what happened to Stacy and I was pleasantly surprised to discover my guess was correct. There are a few unanswered questions, but Paula Treick DeBoard provides readers with a emotionally satisfying and hopeful conclusion to this exceptional novel.

Summary:

With characteristic compassion and searing honesty, MEGAN HART weaves a shattering small-town story about what can turn brother against brother, and the kinds of secrets that cannot remain untold.

Janelle Decker has happy childhood memories of her grandma’s house, and even lived there through high school. Now she’s back with her twelve-year-old son to look after her ailing Nan, and hardly anything seems to have changed, not even the Tierney boys next door.

Gabriel Tierney, local bad boy. The twins, Michael and Andrew. After everything that happened between the four of them, Janelle is shocked that Gabe still lives in St. Mary’s. And he isn’t trying very hard to convince Janelle he’s changed from the moody teenage boy she once knew. If anything, he seems bent on making sure she has no intentions of rekindling their past.

To this day, though there might’ve been a lot of speculation about her relationship with Gabe, nobody else knows she was there in the woods that day…the day a devastating accident tore the Tierney brothers apart and drove Janelle away. But there are things that even Janelle doesn’t know, and as she and Gabe revisit their interrupted romance, she begins to uncover the truth denied to her when she ran away all those years ago.

The Review:

The Favor by Megan Hart is a complex and multi-layered novel about two families whose lives are forever intertwined by their past. It is a captivating read that is full of strong emotions and has an incredibly well developed cast of characters. The compelling plot is sometimes so heartbreaking it will take your breath away.

Janelle Decker spent many blissful summers and her tumultuous senior year with her grandmother, Nan. Her happy memories are marred by the events that led to her rapid and permanent departure twenty years prior. But when Nan’s health takes a turn for the worse, Janelle and her son, Bennett, leave their old life behind to move in with her. Janelle is soon frazzled by her nursing duties and Bennett’s difficult transition to his new school. Adding to her already complicated life are the unresolved issues with the Tierney’s, Nan’s next door neighbors, and the unexpected return of her long absent father.

The characters in The Favor are multifaceted, emotionally damaged people dealing with realistic and painful problems. Nan is facing life threatening health issues that are taking her independence and her dignity. Janelle is a single mom, struggling to give Bennett a happy childhood that will set him on the right path as an adult. The Tierney family (brothers Gabe, Andy and Mike and father Ralph) are dealing with the dysfunction that began in childhood and continues to reverberate into adulthood.

Janelle’s day to day life with her caretaking and parenting duties is emotionally and physically exhausting. Janelle’s struggles with the change in her relationship with Nan are accurately depicted and will resonate with anyone who has had to take care of their parents or an elderly relative. This role reversal is difficult and heartrending but it is wonderfully balanced by the close and loving bond shared by Nan and Janelle.

Janelle is a good parent and her relationship with Bennett is fairly typical in today’s culture. She is trying and mostly succeeding in giving Bennett room to grow and make mistakes while keeping a very close eye on him and his activities. Bennett can be a surly and uncommunicative pre-teen, but he is also a sweet and loving boy whose intuitiveness is sometimes surprising.

The most complicated relationship in the novel is the one between Janelle and the Tierney brothers. Gabe and Andy still live next door with their father, and the dysfunction of their youth still continues. A tragic accident haunts all of the brothers while Andy lives with the devastating effects of that long ago event. Gabe is duty bound to care for Andy and their father and while he is sometimes harsh, he also has a gentler side that he keeps carefully hidden.

Underlying all of the events in the present are the secrets of the past. Flashbacks to pivotal moments from Janelle and Gabe’s relationship provide insight into both characters and vague hints of coming events. Excellent foreshadowing gives readers a good idea of what might have occurred but Ms. Hart has a few unexpected plot twists up her sleeve. And the favor that sets in motion the unstoppable and tragic chain of events that changes everyone’s lives? It is kept tightly under wraps for much of the novel but it is well worth wait as it ties all of the various threads of the plot together in a very dramatic and spellbinding ending.

As is common with Megan Hart’s novels, she puts her characters and her readers through an emotional wringer. She deftly handles a very sensitive subject without going into a lot of detail but once all of the facts are known there is little doubt about what occurred. The ending of The Favor is not a happily ever after but it is a happy for now that gives many of characters the promise of a better future.

The Favor is another exceptional novel by one of my favorite authors that I highly recommend.

Summary:

Expanded Edition! More Story! More Sullivans!

Fans of Bella Andre’s Sullivan Series will love this long-awaited print edition of THE LOOK OF LOVE. It features a longer, more-detailed story with all the emotion and sensuality that readers love. Not to be missed!

Sometimes one look is all it takes

Chloe Peterson has vowed never to make the mistake of trusting a man again. Her reasons are as vivid as the bruises on her cheek. So when her car skids off a wet country road straight into a ditch, she’s convinced the gorgeous guy who rescues her must be too good to be true.

As a successful international photographer, Chase Sullivan has his pick of beautiful women. He’s satisfied with his life—until he finds Chloe and her totaled car on the side of the road in Napa Valley.

With every loving look—and every sinfully sweet caress—the attraction between them sizzles, and Chloe can’t help but wonder if she’s met the man who may be the exception to her rule….

The Review:

The Look of Love is a wickedly sexy romance and fun first installment in Bella Andre’s The Sullivans series. Brief introductions to the Sullivan siblings set the stage for future stories in the series, but this first novel brings readers Chase Sullivan and Chloe Peterson’s whirlwind romance after Chase rescues the stranded Chloe during a storm.

Chase is absolutely wonderful-sweet, sexy, charming and devilishly good looking. He is pretty well-grounded despite the early loss of his father and he is very close to his extended family. Chase is also very intuitive and he not only recognizes, but respects, Chloe’s obvious reluctance to trust a stranger. He is exceedingly patient with her as she works through her issues and he lets her guide their relationship.

Given Chloe’s experience with her abusive ex-husband, she is very skittish and cautious around Chase in the beginning. She is slow to trust Chase, but she eventually relaxes her guard and gives in to her intense attraction to him. While she may not be ready for a relationship she is on board with a no strings fling and they exuberantly explore their desire for one another.

The Look of Love takes place over a few days which gives an “insta-love” feel to Chase and Chloe’s relationship. I did like them as a couple, but their romance feels rushed. Chloe has some serious problems to overcome and her trust issues are resolved really fast.

Despite a few reservations, The Look of Love is an enjoyable read that is fast paced and engaging with deliciously steamy sex scenes. Bella Andre beautifully develops the characters and her intriguing glimpses of Marcus leave me eagerly awaiting From This Moment On, the next novel in The Sullivans series.

Ocean Breeze Series Book Three

Genre: Contemporary, Romance
Length: 384 pages
Book Rating: B

Summary:

Under summer skies, New York Times bestselling author Sherryl Woods evokes family, friendship and heartfelt emotion.

With her two younger sisters heading for the altar, will Samantha Castle exchange old dreams for new ones? Lately she’d rather be on the North Carolina coast with family than in New York with agents and actors. Though she vows not to let her teenage crush on Ethan Cole influence her decision, it’s hard to ignore her feelings for the local war hero.

Ethan lost more than his leg in Afghanistan. He lost his belief in love. Even being surrounded by couples intent on capturing happily-ever-after won’t open this jaded doctor’s heart. It’s going to take a sexy, determined woman—one who won’t take no for an answer.

The Review:

The final installment of Sherryl Woods’ Ocean Breeze series, Sea Glass Island, brings readers Samantha Castle’s romance with Ethan Cole and ties up all of the loose ends from the previous books. As with Emily and Gabi’s stories, Samantha is contemplating her future when she unexpectedly finds love in Sand Castle Bay.

With Emily and Boone’s wedding two weeks away, Samantha returns home to help with the last minute details. The timing could not be better as Samantha is faced with the realization that it might be time for a career change. She does not need the added complication of her sisters and grandmother meddling in her love life, but her protests go unheeded. Thrown together at every opportunity, how long will Samantha and Ethan be able to resist their mutual attraction?

Dumped by his shallow fiancée after he lost his leg in Afghanistan, Ethan does not believe in love. He is unaware of Samantha’s long term crush on him and although he is attracted to her, he has no intention of getting involved with her. Ethan is pleasantly surprised to learn that he has misjudged Samantha but he stubbornly refuses to trust her. Minor setbacks become major roadblocks as Ethan continues to protect his heart from being broken again and he continually pushes Samantha away.

Samantha is quite perceptive and her observations about Ethan give him some much needed perception about some of his actions. She has the self-confidence to stand up to him when he is being unreasonable and she gives him space when he needs it. Samantha is shaken by certain events, but she does not allow them to stand in the way of her future plans.

There is a lot going on in Sea Glass Island besides Samantha and Ethan’s budding romance. Many of the previous plotlines from the preceding novels are finally resolved. Emily uncovers the reason behind her sibling rivalry with Samantha. Emily and Boone are faced with an unanticipated crisis before their walk down the aisle. The sisters’ relationship with their absentee father, Sam, continues to improve. An unexpected romance and wedding catch everyone by surprise and Grandmother Cora Jane is faced with an important decision about her love life.

I have enjoyed getting to know this loving and close-knit family and Sea Glass Island brings Sherryl Woods captivating Ocean Breeze series to a heartwarming and emotionally satisfying end.

Summary:

When life gets complicated, New York Times bestselling author Sherryl Woods proves family—and love—can make all the difference

Facing a personal crisis, ambitious and driven Gabriella Castle retreats to the welcoming arms of her family. Everything she’s worked for has been yanked out from under her, and she seeks the serenity of her grandmother’s home on the North Carolina coast. With difficult decisions to make about her future, the last thing she wants is an unexpected love.

Wade Johnson fell for Gabi the first time he saw her. It’s not the only time he’s found himself in the role of knight in shining armor, but Gabi isn’t looking for a rescuer. To get her to stay, Wade will need a whole lot of patience and gentle persuasion…and maybe the soothing sound of wind chimes on a summer breeze.

The Review:

Wind Chime Point, the second installment of Sherryl Woods’ Ocean Breeze series, is a journey of self discovery for Gabriella “Gabi” Castle. Unemployed and having ended her relationship with her long term boyfriend, Gabi retreats to her grandmother’s home to re-evaluate her priorities.

Usually career driven and goal oriented, Gabi is having trouble deciding what to do about her future. Plagued with uncertainty, Gabi turns to good friend Wade Johnson while she mulls over her options. Wade’s advice proves invaluable as she tries to figure out what to do next in both her personal and professional lives. Although romance is the last thing on her mind, Gabi soon realizes that her feelings for Wade extend beyond friendship, but is she ready for yet another complication in her life?

We really see a different side to Gabi in Wind Chime Point. She is rethinking her past choices and with Wade’s gentle encouragement, she takes a step back from her usual approach to setting goals and making decisions. Gabi becomes quite contemplative and eventually makes a rather unorthodox career choice that will change her future.

Wade is patient, loving and incredibly insightful. He has a great relationship with his sister and he is very involved with his nieces and nephews. Although Wade has overcome a past tragedy, his reluctance to discuss it eventually causes friction in his relationship with Gabi.

The romance portion of the storyline is understated and grows out of Gabi and Wade’s friendship. With so much turmoil in her life, Gabi is reluctant to begin a relationship. Wade’s feelings for Gabi were obvious right from the start, but he is careful to keep things light and casual between them until Gabi is ready for something more serious.

While most of Wind Chime Point focuses primarily on Gabi and Wade, past characters make guest appearances. Much to her granddaughters’ dismay, Grandmother Cora Jane is still working her matchmaking magic. Emily is the midst of planning her upcoming wedding and Samantha is encountering a few rough spots in her career. The sisters’ relationship with their dad, Sam, continues to improve and he is becoming more involved in their lives.

Wind Chime Point is a sweet and heartwarming romance that is quite captivating. The characters are multidimensional with realistic problems to overcome. Sherryl Woods has penned another beautiful novel about love, family and friendship that old and new fans are sure to enjoy.

Summary:

“Sometimes you stumble across a treasure when you’re looking for something else entirely.”

#1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs brings readers to the lush abundance of Sonoma county in a novel of sisters, friendship and how memories are woven like a spell around us.

Tess Delaney makes a living restoring stolen treasures to their rightful owners. People like Annelise Winther, who refuses to sell her long-gone mother’s beloved necklace-despite Tess’s advice. To Annelise, the jewel’s value is in its memories.

But Tess’s own history is filled with gaps: a father she never met, a mother who spent more time traveling than with her daughter. So Tess is shocked when she discovers the grandfather she never knew is in a coma. And that she has been named in his will to inherit half of Bella Vista, a hundred-acre apple orchard in the magical Sonoma town called Archangel.

The rest is willed to Isabel Johansen. A half sister she’s never heard of.

Against the rich landscape of Bella Vista, Tess begins to discover a world filled with the simple pleasures of food and family, of the warm earth beneath her bare feet. A world where family comes first and the roots of history run deep. A place where falling in love is not only possible, but inevitable.

And in a season filled with new experiences, Tess begins to see the truth in something Annelise once told her: if you don’t believe memories are worth more than money, then perhaps you’ve not made the right kind of memories.

From one of America’s most beloved writers, The Apple Orchard is a story of family ties-both old and new-and of the moments that connect our hearts.

The Review:

The perfect mix of past and present, Susan Wiggs The Apple Orchard is an intriguing modern day family saga that is rich with fascinating historic details. It is a beautifully written romance that is compelling and heartwarming and will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment of the Bella Vista series.

Antique treasure hunter Tess Delaney is on the fast track with her career when she receives stunning family news. Raised by her single mother and beloved grandmother, Tess knows little about her family history and she is shocked to learn that she has a grandfather and a half-sister living in Archangel on the family apple orchard, Bella Vista. This discovery will expose long held secrets that span back to World War II and her grandparents’ experiences in Nazi occupied Denmark during World War II. Tess will also embark on an exciting search for a missing family heirloom that will challenge some of her long held beliefs and alter the course of her life.

The characters in The Apple Orchard are vibrant and multi-dimensional. Tess has a distant relationship with her mother and she is career driven with very little personal life. Her half-sister Isabel is devoted to their grandfather, but there are hints that there is a tragedy of some sort in her past. Tess’s love interest Dominic is absolutely wonderful. He is a divorced single dad of two adorable kids and he is unquestionably loyal to Tess’s grandfather Magnus. Although Magnus is seen only briefly, he is a larger than life character that is quite extraordinary.

The Apple Orchard is told from multiple perspectives and current events are interspersed with flashbacks from the past. The story arc concerning Magnus and his involvement with the Danish resistance is quite intriguing and full of interesting information. The details surrounding Tess’s parents’ relationship is revealed through flashbacks from her mother’s point of view and reveals essential information that proves crucial in their search for the missing heirloom.

In The Apple Orchard, Susan Wiggs masterfully weaves a captivating novel about love, family and discovering what is truly important in life. An absolutely delightful romance that is full of exciting twists and turns and unexpected personal connections that will delight readers and leave them aching to spend more time with this inspiring family.
