Summary:

Emma Tupper is a dedicated lawyer with a bright future. But when she takes a month-long leave of absence to go on an African vacation, she ends up facing unexpected consequences. After she falls ill and spends six months trapped in a remote village thanks to a devastating earthquake, Emma returns home to discover that her friends, boyfriend, and colleagues thought she was dead—and that her life has moved on without her.

As she struggles to re-create her old life, throwing herself into solving a big case for a client and trying to
reclaim her beloved apartment from the handsome photographer who assumed her lease, everyone around her thinks she should take the opportunity to change. But is she willing to sacrifice her job, her relationships, and everything else she worked so hard to build?

In Forgotten, Catherine McKenzie tweaks a classic tale of discovering who we really are when everything that brings meaning to our lives is lost.

The Review:

Catherine McKenzie’s latest release, Forgotten, is an engaging and fast-paced novel that is quite compelling. Emma Tupper’s month long holiday in Africa turns into six months when she first falls ill, then becomes trapped in an African village following a catastrophic earthquake. Emma’s return to England is not quite as easy as she expects when she learns everyone thinks she died in the earthquake. As she tries to pick up the pieces of her life, Emma discovers that the life she once lived may not be the life she now wants.

Emma Tupper is a career driven woman who is on the fast track to achieving her goal of partner in a prestigious law firm. But she puts her career on hold following her mother’s death when she receives her mother’s final legacy: a plane ticket to Africa, the one place her mother always dreamed of visiting. Hoping to connect with her mother and perhaps ease her grief, Emma takes a leave of absence from work, leaves her boyfriend behind and sets out on her journey to a place she never had any desire to visit.

When she returns home, Emma is ready to step back into her old life. But, as she quickly discovers, life has gone on without her. Her old job has been given to her nemesis, Sophie, her boyfriend, Craig, has a new girlfriend, and her apartment has been rented to Dominic, a photographer who is nursing a broken heart of his own.

Emma’s transition back into her life is not easy. Her employer will re-hire her, but Emma will have to climb her way back to the top. Is she ready to throw herself back into eighty hour workweeks to achieve her goal? Although her relationship with Craig was on shaky ground when she left for Africa, she is still stunned and heartbroken when she finds out he has a new girlfriend. Equally troubling are her conflicted emotions about her reluctant roommate, Dominic.

About the only thing reassuringly unchanged is Emma’s close friendship with her longtime friend, Stephanie. Stephanie is very supportive of Emma but she does not allow Emma to wallow in self-pity. She is quite perceptive, and her questions to Emma are insightful and thought-provoking.

Emma’s time in Africa is slowly revealed in bits and pieces throughout Forgotten. At first glance, it does not seem like her time away has changed Emma. At first frustrated by everyone’s insistence that she re-evaluate her life, Emma slowly begins to examine her life both before and after her trip and slowly comes to realize that her experiences have irrevocably changed her.

Forgotten is a fascinating novel that is well written with a unique storyline. Catherine McKenzie is an incredibly talented author with a true gift for creating three dimensional and appealing characters that readers can easily relate to. A realistic plot, witty dialogue and an understated romance make Forgotten a thoroughly enjoyable story that I highly recommend.

Summary:

Being stuck together in a redwood forest can really bring your inner animal out . . .

The last thing Gayle Richards wanted was to spend days alone in a cabin with Nolan Hersch, fellow professor and macho loudmouth. How could she observe the animals’ mating habits alongside a man who made her blood boil…and not just in anger? The only thing more frustrating than Nolan’s opinions on male sexual superiority was how much he made her want to rip his clothes off.

Well, the thin air in the mountains must have gone to Gayle’s head, because she sets up a challenge: three days to prove who’s more insatiable in bed. With Gayle and Nolan making their best efforts to wear each other out, this may just be the sexiest experiment of all.

The Review:

Mating Season by Alice Gaines is a sinfully sexy battle of the sexes. Gayle Richards and Nolan Hersch are colleagues whose professional rivalry becomes personal when they are unexpectedly stranded together while monitoring the mating habits of elk.

Gayle and Nolan are well-developed and charming characters. They are extremely self-assured and their self-confidence is quite sexy. While they have strong and opposing opinions, the change in their relationship proves to be an illuminating experience for both of them. I like how both of them are willing to concede to one another’s viewpoints. While both characters experience growth, it is Nolan who undergoes the greatest transformation.

The sparks fly between Gayle and Nolan right from the beginning of Mating Season. Gayle and Nolan’s contentious past adds passion to their encounters. Their sex scenes are exquisitely erotic and scorching hot.

If you are looking for a fast read that is deliciously naughty, then you will love Mating Season. A wonderful installment in Alice Gaines’ delightfully steamy Cabin Fever series that I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

Summary:

Brady Talmadge was a cowboy with five unbreakable rules:
1) Never pick up a pretty hitchhiker
2) Avoid damsels in distress
3) Never order chili at a truck stop
4) Always trust your gut
5) Never tell a lie . . .

This is what happened when he broke all his rules . . . and got into a whole lot of trouble!

On the run from an arranged marriage, Princess Annabella of Monesta dons the guise of a hitchhiking cowgirl. But when she finds herself drenched, alone, and hungry, she has no choice but to trust the tall Texas horse whisperer who offers her a ride. He’s like no one she’s ever known—a strong sexy man who says just what he thinks. And when one wild kiss leaves her breathless, she quickly realizes she’ll give up everything to spend a lifetime of night times in his arms. But how can there be happily-ever-after with palace guards hot on her trail?

The Review:

The second installment in Lori Wilde’s Jubilee, Texas series, The Cowboy and the Princess is a charming love story between two very unlikely people. Annie Coste (Princess Annabella) has lived a sheltered and privileged life. Before her arranged marriage to a stodgy older Prince, she decides to experience all the fun things she has ever wanted to try. A fortuitous meeting with footloose and fancy free horse whisperer Brady Talmadge takes Annie to the delightful town of Jubilee. Brady and her newfound friends provide Annie the opportunity to enjoy the adventures she has been dreaming about her whole life.

Annie is a delightful breath of fresh air. Innocent and naive, she views the world around her with almost childlike wonder and it is so much fun seeing things through her eyes. Annie is incredibly prim, proper, very intelligent… and completely out of her element. She is excited to live on her own and she is thrilled to accomplish ordinary everyday tasks. Annie finds joy in simple pleasures and her excitement is felt by everyone around her.

Brady is such a complex protagonist. He is kind-hearted, laid back and easy going which makes him appear to live a carefree life. He is a loyal and steadfast friend and his ability to read horses is incredible. But don’t let this good-natured cowboy fool you. Brady is full of hidden depths and he is keeping some dark secrets.

I absolutely loved the relationship between Annie and Brady. Their romance is slow growing and they really took the time to get to know one another. Their dates are incredibly sweet and wowza! The sexual tension between them is positively sizzling.

While most of The Cowboy and the Princess is light-hearted and just plain fun, there are some serious issues that this couple must deal with. Annie quickly realizes there will be implications with Brady and her new friends when her deception is uncovered. Brady’s past brings an unexpected complication to his carefree lifestyle. Annie and Brady’s road to “and they lived happily ever after” has a few obstacles and roadblocks they must overcome.

The Cowboy and the Princess is an enchanting feel good novel that fans of contemporary romances will enjoy. There are a couple of things that were easy to predict, but the overall story is well written and quite original. The resolution of the novel is perfect and Lori Wilde gives Annie and Brady the fairy tale ending they so richly deserve.

Summary:

Stranded on a steamy tropical island, . . . these three will create their own heat . . .

Christie Lovejoy is normally all business. But when a hurricane bears down on the exclusive resort she’s sharing with two sexy businessmen, it’s time to throw caution to the tropical winds. How often do you find two gorgeous men with the hots for you . . . and the willingness to share?

Wolf Martin and Jon Carlson have been friends for years, and their taste in women has never overlapped . . . until now. Wolf, Jon, and Christie use the luxurious resort to take the kind of sensual journey that only total isolation will allow. But when the storm recedes, will they be ready to leave their island paradise?

The Review:

Storm Bound by Alice Gaines is a sinfully sexy erotic romance. A luxurious resort and an exotic, isolated island are the perfect setting for this decadent threesome to act on their wicked desires. Their relationship heats up when Christie, Wolf and Jon indulge in an erotic ménage in the midst of a hurricane. But what will become of this explosive threesome when the storm has ended?

Jon and Wolf are business partners and the best of friends. For the first time in the history of their relationship, both men are attracted to the same woman. Extremely competitive, they set out to win the woman they both desire.

Christie Lovejoy is a sexually confident woman who knows what she wants and does not hesitate to manipulate events to get it. Instantly attracted to both Wolf Martin and Jon Tucker, she quickly senses both men’s desire for her. When she becomes aware Jon and Wolf are willing to share her, Christie eagerly begins to fulfill her passionate fantasies.

From voyeurism and masturbation to some light bondage and spanking, the sex scenes in Storm Bound are varied and plentiful. The chemistry between Christie, Jon and Wolf is scorching and the resulting sex between them is explosive. What begins as a short term affair quickly takes on deeper meaning for Christie, Jon and Wolf. While not a conventional happily ever after ending, this threesome comes up with a creative solution for their non-traditional relationship.

If you are looking for a quick read that is delightfully naughty and just a little bit on the wild side, then you are going to love Storm Bound. Alice Gaines’ Cabin Fever novellas provide a wonderful escape from every day life.

Summary:

Snowbound in a cabin . . . able to live out all her fantasies . . .

Laura Barber has dreamt of doing unspeakably delicious things with Ethan Gould for years. Now, stuck in a mountain cabin, she just might get her shot. Ethan offers her the chance to live out each and every one of those desires. They may be rivals in the business world, but in the bedroom they’re a perfect match. Knowing they have only a few days, Laura shakes off all her inhibitions. Every secret need, every lust-filled thought . . . it’s all fair game.

The Review:

Cabin Fever by Alice Gaines is a sexy romance that is deliciously sensuous and steamy. Laura Barber cannot forget the embarrassing night she spilled all of her erotic fantasies to Ethan Gould. Snowbound with no place to go except a mountain cabin with Ethan, will she finally act on her secret desires for Ethan?

Cabin Fever begins with pretty tame sex scenes, but it is not long before Ms. Gaines turns up the heat. Laura is socially awkward and sexually inexperienced. She is also uncomfortable with her desire for kinky sex. Ethan pushes her out of sexual comfort zone and she confesses her darkest desires. Acting out her fantasies for one illicit weekend? No problem. Convincing Laura they have future together? Not so easy, but Ethan won’t give up Laura without a fight.

Cabin Fever is well-written story that is fast-paced and engaging. Laura and Ethan are appealing characters and their past history makes their romance believable. The sexual chemistry between them is incendiary and their sex scenes progressively become more explicit and erotic.

A marvelous novella about embracing your sexuality, Cabin Fever is perfect for anyone who enjoys their romances with a little extra sizzle.

Never Tell: A Novel of Suspense by Alafair Burke

Title: Never Tell: A Novel of Suspense by Alafair Burke
Ellie Hatcher Series, Book Three
Publisher: HarperCollins
Genre: Contemporary, Mystery
Length: 368 pages
Book Rating: B

Review Copy Obtained from Publisher Through Edelweiss

Summary:

Sixteen-year-old Julia Whitmire appeared to have everything: a famous father, a luxurious Manhattan townhouse, a coveted spot at the elite Casden prep school. When she is found dead in her bathtub, a handwritten suicide note left on her bed, her parents insists that their daughter would never take her own life.

But Julia’s enviable life was more complicated than it seemed. The pressure to excel at Casden was enormous. Abuse of prescription anti-depressants and drugs for attention-deficit hyperactivity ran rampant among students; an unlabeled bottle of pills in Julia’s purse suggests she had succumbed to the trend. And a search of Julia’s computer reveals that in the days leading up to her death, she was engaged in a dangerous game of cyberbullying against an unlikely victim.

NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher is convinced the case is a suicide, but she knows from personal experience that a loving family can be the last to accept the truth. When the Whitmires use their power to force a criminal investigation, Ellie’s resistance causes trouble for her both at work and in her personal life.

As she is pressured to pursue a case she doesn’t believe in, she is pulled into Julia’s inner circle-an eclectic mix of overly precocious teenagers from Manhattan’s most privileged families as well as street kids she met in Greenwich Village. But when the target of Julia’s harassment continues to receive death threats, Ellie is forced to acknowledge that Julia may have learned the hard way that some secrets should never be told.

The Review:

Never Tell by Alafair Burke is a superbly crafted and intriguing mystery that is quite suspenseful and full of secrets. NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher is quick to assume that teenage Julia Whitmire’s death is a suicide. Mounting pressure from the Whitmire family forces Ellie and her partner J.J. Rogan to look at Julia’s case a little more closely. Their discoveries take the case in many different but interconnected directions and expose secrets that are best left buried.

Ellie Hatcher is a wonderfully developed albeit slightly dysfunctional protagonist. Her past initially clouds her judgment, and she grudgingly investigates Julia’s death more thoroughly. While she is pretty good at reading people, Ellie sometimes takes people at face value instead of looking a little deeper and beneath the surface.

Ellie’s investigation reveals many puzzling and seemingly unrelated clues. What does a sexual abuse survivor’s blog have to do with Julia’s death? Who is leaving threatening posts on the survivor’s blog? Where does a pharmaceutical company’s drug trial fit in?

Never Tell is a compelling novel with many unexpected twists and turns. Red herrings and misdirects keep the identity of the killer tightly under wraps. Alafair Burke beautifully ties all of the seemingly unrelated events into a fascinating and intricately woven mystery that fans of crime novels are sure to enjoy.
