Excerpt

Droje could not allow himself to be taken alive.

But he also could not permit Larke to die at his side.

This was a mistake. What would Gar and Fel say when he showed up with Larke in tow? And what about Zerne? Droje hadn’t thought this through. He’d been drunk on Larke’s lovemaking, on his kindness and the beauty of his face and body. Droje was foolish and weak to allow Larke to come along in the first place. He needed to go back to his old life where he’d be safe.

Except, his old life wasn’t safe. Larke was a drake, and not an inconspicuous one. He stood a good chance of exposure and arrest simply by virtue of who he was. Still, those were all chances, possibilities, and they faded in the face of the imminent danger Droje had placed Larke in. He opened his mouth to say Larke had to go back.

“Wait here a moment,” Larke whispered. “Let me check if the coast is clear. My face isn’t plastered all over Corpnet.” He smiled at Droje and kissed him.

“Larke. You have to—”

But Larke had already darted ahead. He poked his head out from the alley and looked up and down the street. “Now,” he said and crossed, moving briskly, but not running. Good. Running attracted attention.

Droje followed him. When they reached the alley on the other side of the street, Droje caught up to him and grabbed him by the arm. “Wait. You have to go back.”

“Did you forget something?”

“No. I mean you can’t come with me. You have to go home now, before it’s too late.”

Larke drew back. “Is this because of what we just did? I’m sorry. You’re right. It was reckless. But it won’t happen again. I’ll wait, like you.”

“You still have to go back.”

The light in Larke’s eyes turned cold. “Why?”

“It’s just too dangerous.”

Larke yanked his arm free from Droje. “Staying is too dangerous. You pointed that out before we left the apartment.”

“That’s different.”

Larke leaned in, scanning Droje’s face with his blue eyes. “No. It’s not. And I’m not giving up my chance at freedom just because you’re afraid.”

The set on this guy. How could someone be such a submissive in bed and so willful the rest of the time? But it was that very combination of softness and strength that made Larke so irresistible.

“Besides, you can’t stop me.” Larke stood with his arms folded, one hip thrust out. His defiance awoke the desire Droje had only quelled moments ago.

Droje took a step closer. “Oh no?”

Larke met him. They stood so close Droje felt the heat of Larke’s body.

“What are you going to do? Drag me back to my apartment? We’ll attract notice for sure that way.”

Droje sucked in a deep breath and forced himself to step back. He could not let himself get distracted again.

“Or will you just beat me up and leave me here the way I found you?”

Droje’s arousal fled. He spun away from the man. “You know I’d never—”

“I don’t know you at all. And you don’t know me. But unless you want to get better acquainted in a holding cell in Corp Sec, we’d better keep moving.” Larke took off down the alley, even though he had no idea where they were going.

Incredible. Droje swallowed his curse and followed him.

Saturday Spotlight: Jessica Freely’s Alex in Wonderland & Contest

Title: Alex in Wonderland by Jessica Freely
Publisher: Etopia Press
Genre: M/M, Contemporary, Erotic, Romance

Summary:

What can go wrong in a sex club? Plenty, as Alex discovers on his first visit to Wonderland.

Fresh out of a sexless relationship with a manipulative, two-timing boyfriend, Alex enters the notorious sex club, Wonderland, looking for action. Instead he winds up in one disastrous predicament after another. Between the inept dom, the malfunctioning steam room, and the “alien” go-go boy with glow-in-the-dark everything, it’s beginning to look like Alex will never get laid again. Then a mysterious masked man gives Alex the dance — and the blowjob — of his life, only to disappear again without a trace.

When the night is through, and the masks are cast aside, Alex will discover a passion that lasts far beyond one night in Wonderland.

Excerpt:

Sam leaned over the counter, bringing with him a warm, spicy aroma. “If you have any questions or just need a minute to chill out, you can always come back here. I’m working all night.”

Alex moved closer, drawn by Sam’s dark, sultry gaze. Was Sam flirting with him? Seemed like it. A tingle sizzled through him just at the thought of being wanted by someone like Sam. Then again, after all this time, any friendly attention from an attractive man would seem like an overture. The last thing he wanted to do was come across as desperate as he really was. “Okay. Thanks!”

“No problem.” Sam winked. “Have a good time.”

Alex undressed at one of the benches, blushing like a virgin bride. He fumbled with his belt and dropped his shoes, twice. He never did anything like this, and now he was beginning to remember why. He was an accountant, for God’s sake.

Sam watched him. Did he like what he saw? If he went for slender, boyish twinks, then Alex would be a big disappointment. Big being the operative word. At six two, with a muscular frame to match, there was nothing dainty about Alex, something Brian pointed out whenever Alex hugged him too hard or squished him trying to cuddle on the couch.

Alex pushed his thoughts of Brian aside and managed to get down to his boxer briefs without strangling himself on his shirt or tripping over his pants. He noticed a few other guys kept their underwear on. He would too—a token gesture to his modesty since his tight-fitting boxer briefs left little to the imagination. Still, that thin layer of cloth somehow made him feel not quite so exposed.

He handed the bag with his things over to Sam. Their fingers brushed together. A jolt of electricity coursed through Alex at the contact. For a moment, he paused, tempted to just stay here. But what would Sam make of that? Would he think Alex was afraid?

Saturday Series Spotlight & Giveaway: Jessica Freely’s The Hanovan Universe

Big thanks to Kathy for having me here and doing so much to support Unlawful. And thank you for visiting!

Not Quite a Sequel: Writing multiple stories set in the same world

So this all began because I wanted to offer readers who bought my last book, His Own Devices, during release week something special. I decided a free story would be a nice way to show my appreciation. That’s how the short story Unlawful came into being.

Because I was offering it bundled with His Own Devices, I faced a few constraints about what I could do with it. I wanted it to be related to HOD, but I couldn’t make it a sequel for fear of giving away the ending. A prequel was also problematic, for the reverse reason. Anyone reading HOD first would encounter spoilers for Unlawful.

Hmm…

So what I decided to do was write a parallel story to His Own Devices. Unlawful takes place in the same universe — one where the Hanovan people hold supreme power. But where His Own Devices takes place on the mining planet Kalifax and its moon, Dran, Unlawful is set on the Hanovan home world.

This gave me an opportunity to explore the culture and politics of the people who in His Own Devices we see only as the oppressors of Cam, Sunshine, and the miners. And as is usually the case, it turns out that the Hanovans are not all evil, not all of them agree with the laws of their nation, and some of them are also victimized by those laws.

The events in Unlawful take place at roughly the same time as those in His Own Devices, and the connection between them is tenuous yet significant. I hope you will enjoy reading more about the adventures of Cam and Sunshine and Larke and Droje, and the universe in which they live.

Title: His Own Devices by Jessica Freely
The Hanovan Universe Book One
Publisher: Loose Id, LLC
Genre: M/M, Science Fiction, Space Opera, Erotic, Romance
Length: Novella

Summary:

Cam still has the scars from his time as a slave mining malleum, a metal as strong as steel and as pliable as human flesh. His talent for fixing machines was his ticket out of that hell, but when he’s ordered to repair a malfunctioning android and instead falls in love, Cam discovers it’s his own shattered spirit that needs mending.

Sunshine’s “flaw” is that he has a personality and free will, traits that interfere with his role as the perfect, obedient worker. They also make him smart, sweet, and sexy as hell. Sunshine is determined to pursue a relationship with Cam, no matter what it takes. No penis? No problem! He’s made of malleum, and he can modify his anatomy to meet Cam’s deepest desires. The hard part is getting Cam to admit what he really wants.

Meanwhile, Cam’s boss expects him to complete repairs on the new worker prototype. It’ll be the mines for Cam and the scrap heap for Sunshine unless they can outwit a corporation founded on slavery and prove that even in the most unexpected places, love flourishes, transforming not just one wounded man, but also a whole world.

Note: This book contains explicit sexual situations, graphic language, and material that some readers may find objectionable: male/male sexual practices.
