Summary:

International bestseller Mhairi McFarlane explores lifelong friendships, long-buried secrets, and unexpected love in a heartfelt, emotional new novel, perfect for fans of Evvie Drake Starts Over, The Two Lives of Lydia Bird, or In Five Years.

Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the four are as close as ever, Thursday night bar trivia is sacred, and Eve is still secretly in love with Ed. Maybe she should have moved on by now, but she can’t stop thinking about what could have been. And she knows Ed still thinks about it, too.

But then, in an instant, their lives are changed forever.

In the aftermath, Eve’s world is upended. As stunning secrets are revealed, she begins to wonder if she really knew her friends as well as she thought. And when someone from the past comes back into her life, Eve’s future veers in a surprising new direction…

They say every love story starts with a single moment. What if it was just last night?

Review:

Just Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane is an emotional, humorous novel of friendship, beginnings and endings.

Eve Harris, Susie Hart, Ed Cooper and Justin have been best mates since school days. Now in their mid-thirties, Eve is still in love with Ed, the one who got away but she works hard not to let her feelings interfere with their friendship. Susie is always ready with a one or two liner that defuses any situation. Ed is in a long-term relationship with Hester and Justin is single. When one of their friends dies, the group is rocked and changes become inevitable as secrets are uncovered. Will their friendships remain intact in the aftermath of this tragic loss?

Eve is funny, loyal, kind and compassionate. She is absolutely shattered after losing her best friend. But when she discovers a heartbreaking secret, Eve is incredibly hurt and unable to understand the shocking betrayal. As life begins to regain normalcy, she takes an unexpected road trip with the unlikeliest travel mate. Despite a bit of uncertainty, Eve finds herself enjoying not just the journey but the person she is with. The excursion is stunningly life altering as Eve begins to view certain things in her life through a completely different lens.

Just Last Night is a touching, laugh out loud novel with marvelous characters and a very relatable storyline. Eve undergoes a realistic transformation that will leave readers laughing, crying and ultimately rooting for her as she also discovers an unanticipated happily ever after.  Mhairi McFarlane brings this brilliant novel to a pitch perfect conclusion that will bring a smile to readers’ faces.  I absolutely adored and highly recommend this captivating novel.
