Summary:

The third book in the Highland, Georgia romantic comedy series from Laura Trentham, A Highlander is Coming to Town, full of love, laughs…and highlanders!

You better watch out. . .

Holt Pierson is dreading Christmas. His parents absconded to Florida for the season and left him to handle the family farm which will be his one day—whether he wants it or not. Driven by duty, Holt has always followed the path expected of him. But lately, he’s been questioning what he wants and where he belongs. Will assuming the responsibility of the Pierson farm make him happy or is there something—or someone—else out in the wider world calling to him?

To Claire Smythe, the Scottish lead singer of a touring band, Highland, Georgia, is the perfect place to hide . . .until a very handsome and deeply curious Holt begins to ask all the questions Claire doesn’t want to answer. As Holt draws Claire out from under and into the fabric of small-town life, can Claire put the past behind her and embrace the unexpected gifts of the season—including the new and lasting love?

Review:

A Highlander Is Coming to Town by Laura Trentham is a light-hearted, fun romance. Although this newest release is the third novel in the Highland, Georgia series, it can be read as a stand-alone.

Claire Smythe left her band after they appeared at Highland’s summer festival. She has been avoiding her family and upcoming business responsibilities in Scotland for years.  But with her fast approaching birthday, Claire will have to return to take on the duties awaiting her.  She is currently working as a live-in companion for the tough but kind-hearted Ms. Meadows.  Claire has worked hard to fly under the radar since she does not want to answer any questions about herself. But after meeting Ms. Meadows’ sexy and flirtatious neighbor, Holt Pierson, Claire finds it difficult to stay away from him.

Holt is quite intrigued by Claire but he respects her wishes not to talk about herself. He cannot help but try to lend her a hand since she seems to keep running into transportation issues. He must first get past the formidable (to him) Ms. Meadows, but she soon warms up to him.  Holt is surprised by how interested he is in Claire, but he knows there is no future for them since she plans on leaving town.

Holt and Claire are a wonderful couple who are a surprisingly good fit. Claire is reserved and remains tight-lipped about herself. Holt is laid-back and understanding of her need for privacy. Once their attraction burns too bright to resist, they originally agree  to a casual fling.  And even if they do fall in love, Claire cannot remain in Highland. Can she?

A Highlander Is Coming to Town is a very charming romance with marvelous characters and an interesting storyline. Holt and Claire are an appealing couple and their scenes together are sweet and a little steamy. Ms. Meadows is a wonderful woman who does not realize how much she needs Claire in her life. With a minor conflict jeopardizing Claire and Holt’s future together, Laura Trentham brings this heartwarming romance to a heartfelt and uplifting conclusion. An outstanding addition to the Highland, Georgia series that old and new fans are going to love.

Iain Connors is the poster boy for the strong and silent type. Growing up a loner at Cairndow Castle in Scotland with only the cliffs and moors for company, it’s understood Iain will assume the mantle of Cairndow groundskeeper when his father is ready to relinquish it. But his stint in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces has opened up a whole new world—and now, rather than settle down, he accepts an invitation to travel to the States to take charge of the Highland Games. After all, he’s led men into battle, how hard can planning a party be?

Anna Maitland is ready to step up for her best friend Isabel Blackmoor, who can’t run the Games in their hometown this year. Surely Anna, a dance instructor with boundless energy, spirit, and charm, is up for the challenge? What she doesn’t anticipate is a man in a kilt who turns up claiming he’s the one in charge. What’s worse about this Iain? He’s so infuriatingly handsome that she can’t help but fantasize about him whispering sweet-nothings in her ear in his rumbly, sexy brogue. . .

Review:

A Highlander in a Pickup by Laura Trentham is a delightfully charming romance. Although this latest release is the second novel in the Highland, Georgia  series, it can easily be read as a standalone.

Dance teacher Anna Maitland is in charge of organizing this year’s Highland Games. She does not  want or need the assistance of Iain Connors but she eventually grudgingly accepts his help. Anna also tries to ignore her growing fascination of and attraction to Iain. But will she be able to continue to resist the kilt-wearing, reserved Scotsman?

Anna is fiercely independent and does not trust easily. She has a complicated relationship with her mother who raised her on her own after her father abandoned them. Anna is devoted to her students and she is increasingly concerned about one of her young dancers. She has also had a string of bad luck with the men has dated, so Anna has no plans to act on her growing desire for Iain.

After leaving the military, Iain returned to Cairndow Castle where he is expected to take over as caretaker when his father retires. But he becomes increasingly restless and uncertain of his future the more time he spends at the castle. Feeling a bit trapped by parental expectation, Iain readily agreed to travel to Highland to help Anna with the Highland Games.  Although eager to lend assistance, Iain is a bit of a loner and lacks confidence with dating. He is immediately taken with Anna and his admiration for the sassy dance instructor continues to grow.

With Iain’s departure date looming, he and Anna are finding it more and more difficult not to give in to their mutual attraction. Finally throwing caution to the wind, they eagerly embark on a passionate fling. But what neither of them is willing to admit is their feelings for each other run much deeper than desire.  But what chance do they have for a future together when Anna’s destiny is firmly in Highland and Iain is obligated to return to Scotland?

A Highlander in a Pickup is a heartwarming romance with an enchanting small town setting and marvelous cast of characters. Anna and Iain are beautifully drawn, vibrant characters that are immensely appealing. The storyline is engaging and fast-paced. The romance between Anna and Iain is sweet yet steamy.  Laura Trentham brings this marvelous romance to a heartfelt and uplifting conclusion.  The touching epilogue will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the marvelous Highland, Georgia  series.

Summary:

From award-winning author Laura Trentham comes An Everyday Hero, an emotionally layered novel about redemption, second chances and discovering that life is worth fighting for.

At thirty, Greer Hadley never expected to be forced home to Madison, Tennessee with her life and dreams of being a songwriter up in flames. To make matters worse, a series of bad decisions and even crappier luck lands her community service hours at a nonprofit organization that aids veterans and their families. Greer cannot fathom how she’s supposed to use music to help anyone deal with their trauma and loss when the one thing that brought her joy has failed her.

When Greer meets fifteen-year-old Ally Martinez, her plans to stay detached and do as little as possible get thrown away. New to town and dealing with the death of her father in action, she hides her emotions behind a mask of bitterness and sarcasm, but Greer is able to see past it and recognizes pieces of who she once was in Ally. The raw and obvious talent she possesses could take her to the top and Greer vows to make sure life’s negativities don’t derail Ally’s potential.

After Greer is assigned a veteran to help, she’s not surprised Emmett Lawson, the town’s golden boy, followed his family’s legacy. What leaves her shocked is the shell of a man who believes he doesn’t deserve anyone’s help. A breakthrough with Ally reminds Greer that no one is worth giving up on. So she shows up one day with his old guitar, and meets Emmett’s rage head on with her stubbornness. When a situation with Ally becomes dire, the two of them must become a team to save her—and along the way they might just save themselves too.

Review:

An Everyday Hero by Laura Trentham is a beautiful novel of healing, redemption and love. Although this newest release is the second installment in the Heart of a Hero series, it can be read as a standalone.

Thirty year old Greer Hadley is back in her small hometown of Madison, TN after years of trying to launch her music career in Nashville.  Living with her parents and performing court ordered community service, she is uncertain what she wants to do next. Although nervous and unsure, Greer begins her community service. She is initially skeptical that she can help fifteen year old Ally Martinez work through her issues stemming from her military father’s death in Afghanistan. But she is very pleased as she begins making progress in connecting with Ally.

Despite her small successes with Ally, Greer is less certain she will be able to help former classmate Emmett Lawson.   Emmett is a military veteran discharged from service after he was wounded in action. He has retreated from everyone as he spends his days in isolation in a cabin on his family’s horse farm.  Greer refuses to give up, but he is not exactly cooperative as she continues working on bringing him back from the darkness that envelopes him.  Her persistence gradually begins to pay off, but Emmett’s emergence from grief and survivor’s guilt is a slow, fragile process.

Despite her feelings of failure and uncertainty, Greer is surprisingly upbeat and positive as she helps both Ally and Emmett. She is also little taken aback at how glad she is to be in Madison. Greer’s journey of self-discovery is a work in progress as she finds herself taking employment that feels like a step backward. But with her self-confidence beginning to return due to her sessions with Ally, Greer feels much optimistic about her future.

Greer and Emmett’s relationship is a delicate dance as they both try to deal with their respective issues. Greer does not back down from Emmett’s somewhat adversarial attitude and he slowly but surely begins to emerge from his self-imposed isolation. Greer is uncertain what her next steps will be and Emmett offers her unexpected support and encouragement. Their friendship slowly turns into a real relationship but do they have a future together?

An Everyday Hero is an warm and engaging novel with a vibrant cast of characters and a heartfelt storyline. Greer and Emmett are multi-layered, true to life characters who are working on personal problems that are realistic and relatable. Ally’s grief is palpable as she tries to come to term with her heartbreaking loss.  Although there is slight romantic element, the main focus of the novel is the characters’ growth as they work to overcome their issues.  Laura Trentham brings this captivating novel to an uplifting conclusion that tugs on the heartstrings.

I absolutely loved and highly recommend this latest addition to the Heart of a Hero series to readers of the genre.

Summary:

The timeless romance, soaring passion—and gorgeous men—of Scotland come to modern-day America. And the rules of love will never be the same…

Isabel Buchanan is fiery, funny, and never at a loss for words. But she is struck speechless when her mother returns from a trip to Scotland with a six-foot-tall, very handsome souvenir. Izzy’s mother is so infatuated by the fellow that Izzy has to plan their annual Highland Games all by herself. Well, not completely by herself. The Highlander’s strapping young nephew has come looking for his uncle…

Alasdair Blackmoor has never seen a place as friendly as this small Georgia town—or a girl as brilliant and beguiling as Izzy. Instead of saving his uncle, who seems to be having a lovely time, Alasdair decides he’d rather help Izzy with the Highland Games. Show her how to dance like a Highlander. Drink like a Highlander. And maybe, just maybe, fall in love with a Highlander. But when the games are over, where do they go from here?

Review:

A Highlander Walks into a Bar by Laura Trentham is a cute romance that is also quite humorous.

Isabel “Izzy” Buchanan lives with her widowed mother, Rose, at their family home in Highland, Georgia. Izzy is stunned when her mom returns from a trip to Scotland with a very handsome Scotsman, Gareth Connors. She is a bit uneasy and worried about their burgeoning romance but with little she can do about the situation, so Izzy forges ahead with planning their annual Highland Games. A bit frazzled since Rose is pre-occupied with Gareth, the last thing Izzy needs is another complication in her life. When Alasdair Blackmoor unexpectedly arrives to check on Gareth, Izzy is both attracted to and suspicious of the sexy Scotsman.  Will Izzy be able to figure out what Gareth and Alasdair want from her and Rose? And will she be able to resist giving in to her desire for the oh so charming Alasdair?

Izzy is an accountant by day and aspiring author in her spare time. She has a wonderful sense of humor and a penchant for spouting obscure facts when nervous. Due to a couple of embarrassing incidents,  Izzy lacks confidence and she does not like to be in the limelight.

Although Alasdair is slightly estranged from Gareth, he loves him and wants to make sure he is not being taken advantage of. He is charmed by the small town and he is also quite drawn to Izzy. Despite his qualms, Alasdair finds his time in Highland to be just what he needs to make some decisions about his career and his relationships with his family.

Despite liking Izzy, Alasdair still has doubts about her and Rose’s intentions towards Gareth.  Trying to protect Gareth, Alasdair impetuously sets something in motion that immediately spirals out of his control. As he and Izzy get to know one another, he keeps quiet about what is going on behind the scenes. But will Alasdair find a way to fix his mistake before it is too late?

A Highlander Walks into a Bar is a light-hearted romance that is fast-paced and engaging. Izzy and Alasdair are endearing characters who are vibrantly developed and easy to like. Their romance is sweet with just a hint of steam.  The conflict that arises between them is easy to predict but quickly resolved.  Laura Trentham neatly sets up the next installment in the delightful Highland, Georgia series with a lovely epilogue. I absolutely loved and highly recommend this laugh out loud romance!

Summary:

A young widow embraces a second chance at life when she reconnects with those who understand the sacrifices made by American soldiers and their families in award-winning author Laura Trentham’s The Military Wife.

Harper Lee Wilcox has been marking time in her hometown of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina since her husbandNoah Wilcox’s death, nearly five years earlier. With her son Ben turning five and living at home with her mother, Harper fights a growing restlessness, worried that moving on means leaving the memory of her husband behind.

Her best friend, Allison Teague, is dealing with struggles of her own. Her husband, a former SEAL that served with Noah, was injured while deployed and has come home physically healed but fighting PTSD. With three children underfoot and unable to help her husband, Allison is at her wit’s end.

In an effort to reenergize her own life, Harper sees an opportunity to help not only Allison but a network of other military wives eager to support her idea of starting a string of coffee houses close to military bases around the country.

In her pursuit of her dream, Harper crosses paths with Bennett Caldwell, Noah’s best friend and SEAL brother. A man who has a promise to keep, entangling their lives in ways neither of them can foresee. As her business grows so does an unexpected relationship with Bennett. Can Harper let go of her grief and build a future with Bennett even as the man they both loved haunts their pasts?

Review:

The Military Wife by Laura Trentham is a poignant, heartwarming and emotional novel about many different aspects of military life for spouses, veterans and active duty members.

Five years after the death of her Navy SEAL husband, Harper Wilcox is comfortable with her life yet she is not fulfilled. She and her young son, Ben, live with her mom, Gail, who is supportive yet refreshingly direct when talking with her daughter about her future. Much of her five years of marriage to Noah was spent apart due to multiple deployments so Harper has tends to gloss over the unhappier parts of their wedded life.  Harper pushed aside her own career ambitions as she ran up against the very real discrimination military spouses face from potential employers.  In the present, Harper might have been content to continue coasting along, but an unexpected call from her friend Allison Teague turns out to be life altering.

Allison’s husband, Darren, has recently returned from yet another war zone deployment and she barely recognizes the man she married. He is suffering from a serious case of post traumatic stress disorder but he rebuffs all of her efforts to help him. Allison and their three children walk on eggshells around Darren, whose nightmares, insomnia and hair trigger temper leave everyone fearful. Allison is in desperate needs support and Harper never hesitates to rush to her friend’s side.

During the course of her visit, Harper discovers some troubling information about a cash payment she received from Noah’s friend and fellow SEAL  Bennett Caldwell. Bennett is now a civilian so she tracks him down at his survival training business but he refuses to answer her questions. He is the epitome of the strong, silent type and he sees no need to revisit his painful memories.  He remains deeply affected about losing his brother in arms and he continues to struggle with survivor’s guilt and residual PTSD. Bennett’s  feelings toward Harper are complicated yet he cannot resist spending time with her and  young Ben. But before their unexpected relationship can move forward, Bennett will have to decide whether or not he can provide answers for Harper’s questions about Noah’s death.

The Military Wife is an insightful novel that touches on many relevant issues that provide a realistic glimpse into military life.  Harper’s story arc highlights the reality of loving then losing a spouse during a combat mission.  Bennett’s struggle with survivor’s guilt and the painful loss of his best friend is realistically depicted. His reticence to  reopen old wounds is understandable as is his cautious approach to a relationship with Harper.   Allison and Darren’s storyline is a heartbreaking glimpse of the military member’s hidden wounds of war along with its devastating effects on their family.  Laura Trentham’s sensitive portrayal of military life is incredibly accurate and shines a much needed light on the challenges spouses, children and servicemen face during their careers. This heartfelt novel  will make readers laugh,  cry  and ultimately, rejoice, as they follow Harper, Bennett, Allison and Darren on their healing journey to happily ever after.

Just a side note, I am a military wife so I attest to the authenticity of the characters’ experiences. During the course of my husband’s twenty-six year career, I witnessed or experienced many to the events depicted in the novel.

Summary:

Cottonbloom is the perfect place for starting over, finding your way back home—and falling head over heels. . .

Ella Boudreaux has a lot to prove to her family, friends, and foes—and to herself. So when her marriage ends she decides to invest her energy and money into a place that brings back some of Ella’s happiest memories: the Abbott brothers’ garage. Maybe, if she puts her mind to it, she can teach skeptical, stubborn Mack Abbott how to make the business a true success. Which would be a lot easier if the hunky mechanic didn’t make her motor run quite so fast…and hot.

Mack was furious when his brother, Ford, sold his share of the business. He’s in no rush to team up with a wealthy divorcée who shows up to the garage in stilettos—and the longest, sexiest legs he’s seen in forever. But Ella’s grit and determination won’t quit…and soon Mack can see that she’s been down a few rough roads herself. Neither Mack nor Ella can deny the fierce attraction that’s revving up between them. Could it be that true love has been in the backseat all along…and they’ve finally found the key?

Review:

Set the Night on Fire by Laura Trentham is a charming enemies to lovers romance. This sixth installment in the delightful Cottonbloom series can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend the previous novels as well.

Following her divorce, Ella Boudreaux moved to Cottonbloom to start over. She has made incredible strides overcoming the damage wrought on her self-esteem and self-confidence by her ex-husband.  Ella is a highly intelligent, savvy businesswoman and she has very quietly amassed a fortune through her keen business investments. Her most recent business acquisition means Ella now owns a quarter of the Abbott brothers’ car restoration and garage. She immediately butts heads with Mack Abbott, who is furious with his brother Ford for selling his shares of the family owned business. Ella has plenty of backbone and she refuses to allow Mack to intimidate her and a surprising attraction catches both of them off guard. Will  Mack’s animosity toward her prevent them from giving into their scorching hot passion?

Mack is the de facto boss of the garage and Ella’s purchase of Ford’s shares grates on him. He has finally come to terms with the sudden death of their father two years earlier but he cannot quite bring himself to forgive Ford’s betrayal. Mack is also dealing with the sudden reappearance of his mother, whom he has not seen since she walked out on their family when he was a child. Needless to say, the last thing Mack needs is unwanted business partner, but will he give Ella a chance to implement her shrewd ideas for growing and streamlining their business?

The relationship between Ella and Mack is contentious but neither of them can deny their sizzling attraction for one another. Much to Mack’s frustration, Ella remains undaunted by his attempts to browbeat her into staying away from the garage.  She is plucky and resourceful and she rises to whatever task he throws her way. Mack’s brothers, Jackson and Wyatt, genuinely like Ella and they become her unlikely champions with Mack. The transition from business foes to a wary friendship paves the way for their budding romance but a misunderstanding threatens the future of their relationship.

Set the Night on Fire is a fun-filled, heart-felt romance that is fast-paced and engaging. Ella is a feisty, compassionate woman whose recovery from an emotionally abusive marriage is inspiring. Mack is a gruff yet immensely appealing man who is in danger of repeating the same mistakes of his beloved father. Ella and Mack are a sweet couple whose fiery attraction leads to some blazing hot love scenes. Despite some drama late in the novel, Laura Trentham brings this newest addition to her beloved Cottonbloom series to a sigh-worthy conclusion. A captivating read that I great enjoyed and highly recommend to readers of the genre.
