Spotlight & Q & A: The Russian Endgame by Allan Topol

It is my extreme pleasure to welcome author Allan Topol to Book Reviews & More by Kathy.

1. Where are you based and where do you do most of your writing?

I am based in Chevy Chase, Maryland, a suburb of Washington D.C. I do much of my writing in the study in my house. However, I also travel a great deal, particularly researching international locales for my novels. When I travel, I am always writing whether it’s on an airplane, in a hotel room, or in a café. I am fortunate that I can concentrate and tune out any background noise.

So, for example, I am now working on a book about Italy. I did writing this summer in Sardinia, in Stresa, and in Paris, as well as other places in Northern Italy.

2. How did you choose to write in the thriller genre?

Before I began writing novels, I wrote nonfiction articles dealing with international issues and I still do that. Recently, one of my articles, inspired by my new novel, The Russian Endgame, appeared on the Huffington Post and I was invited to be a regular blogger for the Huffington Post. For several years I wrote op-ed pieces for Military.com

I turned to fiction and the thriller genre in part in order to present my thoughts and ideas about international issues while presenting a fast-moving, page turner, with strong male and female characters. I always wanted to write fiction and found that the thriller genre suited my style and my ideas.

3. What distinguishes your novels from other thrillers?

My objective in writing a novel is to have the reader learn something about an important international geopolitical issue and something about history involving a foreign country at the same time that the reader is staying up at night turning pages and enjoying the story. This is what distinguishes my novels from other thrillers. Is the concept that the reader will come away having learned something about an important international topic at the same time that the reader enjoys the stories.

4. How do you get your ideas for writing?

Some of my ideas come from international events which are unfolding rapidly in the world. In The Russian Endgame, the possibility of a resurgent Russia joining with China in an alliance to inflict harm on the United States is an idea which came to me from my following current events involving Russian and China. Likewise, another element in The Russian Endgame is China’s effort to steal advanced U.S. defense technology. This is occurring in the real world, and when I read about these events I began to consider how I might weave them into a story. However, I wish to emphasize that I am not writing non-fiction and these serious topics, while interesting and an important part of the novel, are merely background. What drives the novel is the story and the characters. And those I had a great deal of fun developing in The Russian Endgame.

5. How do you get your ideas for the characters?

My characters are composites of people I have met throughout life. The Russian Endgame is my ninth novel. While I have been writing novels for a number of years, I have also been practicing law with a large Washington law firm. As a lawyer, I have gotten to meet individuals, many of whom have striking personality traits, and traveled to foreign locales. These people whom I’ve met have characteristics which I have drawn upon those in creating my characters.

Also, my hero, Craig Page, is to some extent autobiographical and to some extent a product of my fantasy. Craig is from a blue collar background, as I am. We both attended Carnegie Mellon University. He is a patriot who loves his country and wants to help the United States. He hates bureaucracy, as I do. That much is the reality. Then there is a fantasy. The missions Craig goes on, the battles in which he engages are products of my imagination. I have not been involved in the kind of shoot outs which Craig regularly does, except in my mind.

My lead female character and Craig’s love interest is Elizabeth Crowder. She’s smart, determined, gutsy and courageous. She represents the type of strong female character whom I have come to respect over the years and who I would like to feature in my novels.

6. Why do you now have series characters?

For my first six novels, I never repeated the same characters. However, when I wrote The China Gambit, my seventh novel, I became attached to Craig Page and Elizabeth Crowder, my two lead characters, and I did not want to let go of them. So it seemed to make sense to begin a series with them.

I have found that satisfying as an author and I have appreciated that many readers have told me that they, too, have become attached to the characters. They now feel as if they know Craig and Elizabeth.

It has been a challenge, however, in using series characters to make certain that each novel is a standalone novel, and I believe that I have achieved that. Thus, the reader who picks up The Russian Endgame will be able to fully appreciate that novel even if that reader has not read The China Gambit or The Spanish Revenge, the first two novels with these series characters.

7. How was the title The Russian Endgame decided?

I like putting the name of the country which plays a major role in the novel into the title. For example, The China Gambit and The Spanish Revenge. So putting the word Russian was easy. The hard part was finding the noun, which it should modify. I like Endgame because it implies moves in a game of chess. Although there is no chess in this novel, Craig and General Zhou are engaged in a mental battle with each other that resembles a chess game. In one respect, a certain finality is reached among my lead characters and hence the word Endgame. They are approaching their final moves. I do not want to say any more about it for fear of giving away the story.

I have received very favorable comments on the title selection.

I hope you will read and enjoy The Russian Endgame. Please feel free to give me your comments on the reader mail on my website, www.AllanTopol.com.

Blog Tour Stop, Q & A, Excerpt: All of Me by LC Wilkinson

Kathy: What book do you recommend everyone should read? Why?

Ms. Wilkinson: Phew, that’s a hard one; there are so many books I could recommend. I’m going to cheat and choose three. For the classic I’ll say Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, because it’s a moving portrayal of the joys and perils of love, and it reminds me how lucky I am to have been born in the West in the late twentieth century; Anna is so restricted by her gender and class. For a modern classic I’ll say Ian McEwan’s Atonement because it’s so clever and yet it still made me cry buckets for the lovers. And for the erotic must-read The Story of O, because it set the standard for so many that followed.

Kathy: What is your guilty pleasure?

Ms. Wilkinson: Only one? Argh! Cake, cake and more cake. Passion cake and Coffee and Walnut are my greatest weakness.

Kathy: Favorite meal?

Ms. Wilkinson: I’m pretty greedy and like most cuisine, but Thai is a firm favourite. Tofu green curry with noodles and lashings of lemon grass.

Kathy: If you could time travel, what time period would you visit?

Ms. Wilkinson: Into the future, though not too far. Maybe thirty years. I could glimpse how my sons turn out, what kind of old lady I become and whether or not to invest in Botox now. It would give me a chance to sort any potential problem areas out and lay the right kind of foundations. Not that I’m a control freak or anything!

Excerpt

Mr Hot led me through to a brightly lit room, the light scorching my eyes after near darkness. He pulled up a wooden stool and gestured for me to sit. I did as I was instructed. Row upon row of bottles of oil, condiments, herbs and spices lined shelves that covered an entire wall. It was a store cupboard, and the strip lighting was harsh; every fine line, blemish and open pore would be visible. Inwardly, I cursed my lack of foundation once more. I felt exposed, stripped right down, and vulnerable. I shielded my eyes, allowing my hand to drop low enough to conceal most of my face.

‘Better here, fewer people. Can I get you a drink? Cup of tea?’ he said.

‘Something stronger might be better.’ I attempted to cover my embarrassment with humour. He did not laugh, or even smile. ‘Water would be great. Wouldn’t do to be seen drunk. Imagine what they’d make of that,’ I added quickly.

Through a gap in my fingers I watched him push open swing doors with considerable force and sashay out, revealing the bustle of a hectic lunchtime kitchen; he barked out an instruction in a language I couldn’t quite place. Italian probably, possibly Spanish. This was no ordinary waiter in more ways than one. He returned moments later.

Despite his blistering good looks, or maybe because of them, I wanted to get the hell out of there; I gulped down the water. ‘Thank you. Can you show me the other way out now please?’

‘It’s not too soon?’

‘I have to be somewhere.’

At the exit, he paused and looked into my eyes, the hazel fading to black as his pupils dilated. He ran his tongue over those sensual lips. I couldn’t breathe and for a moment I thought I might pass out. The attraction I’d felt was mutual; he was devouring me with his gaze; his desire was palpable. Had it been a movie, or an episode of the cheap drama I’d been in, we’d have thrown ourselves at each other, kissed passionately, before being interrupted by an angry chef brandishing a meat knife. I coughed; it broke the spell.

He leant forward to grab the door handle, the bouquet of his aftershave mingling with a distinct, very masculine aroma. I was soooo tempted, but this was real life, and my personal life was enough of a mess. He opened the door, leant forward to look up and down the street before turning back to me and nodding that it was clear. Neither of us knew what to say. I had no idea if he knew, understood, or even cared why the press were hounding me, and I wasn’t inclined to explain.

I held out my hand. ‘Thank you. You saved my life.’

He took my hand, but rather than shaking it, as I had intended, he lifted it to his mouth and kissed the back. A charge raced up my arm, exploding in my mouth and groin. ‘It was nothing. Anyone would have done the same.’

‘Thanks anyway,’ I gasped. I had to get out of there, and quick. My internal red light was flashing: danger, danger, danger.

I stepped into the street and, unsure which direction to take, turned right and walked; the skin on my hand still thrumming from the touch of his lips. I wanted to look back, and tried desperately to resist the urge. After a few metres, I gave up and turned my head. There was no sign of him.

Blog Tour Stop, Q & A & Contest: Three Little Words by Susan Mallery

Follow the rest of the tour HERE.

I am super thrilled to welcome New York Times Bestselling author Susan Mallery to Book Reviews & More by Kathy. Ms. Mallery stopped by to answer a few questions about her wildly popular Fool’s Gold series.

1. What’s next for the town of Fool’s Gold?

The Fool’s Gold Cookbook will be released the end of August, and I’ve written a short Fool’s Gold novella for the cookbook, which you won’t find anywhere else. So not only do you get 150 pretty amazing recipes, but you get a love story, as well.

Then, on September 24, CHRISTMAS ON 4TH STREET will be released. I adore writing Christmas romances, and this one was especially fun because the heroine, Noelle Perkins, has opened a Christmas store in downtown Fool’s Gold. The only problem is, they’re getting a lot of snow this year in the Sierra Nevadas, and her seasonal employees would rather ski than work. She’s stunned when Gabriel Boylan offers to lend a hand. Why would the sexy Army doctor want to spend his free time on leave working in her store? Gabriel is at a crossroads in his life. He has to decide whether to re-enlist, or to try to build a life beyond the Army. Working at The Christmas Attic – with beautiful Noelle – could just help him decide.

2. On August 27, you’ll release your Fool’s Gold Cookbook with more than 150 recipes to complement your wildly popular Fool’s Gold series. Where do you get your interest in cooking?

I’ve never enjoyed spending hours in the kitchen. Like many women, I’m too busy for that! But I do enjoy eating delicious meals made with fresh ingredients, and I think preparing a meal for my family is one of the most loving things I can do to nurture them. In the Fool’s Gold Cookbook, you’ll find recipes that are pretty easy even for the reluctant cook, and that don’t take hours. They’re organized by season, then further broken down into everyday dishes and some for special occasions. The cookbook is really beautiful, with lots of full-color photos. I’m excited that it will be out in time for the holiday shopping season because I think it will make a wonderful Christmas gift.

If you pre-order it, be sure to hold onto your receipt because on August 12, I’ll launch a pre-order contest for the cookbook on my website, www.susanmallery.com. I’m giving away a KitchenAid mixer!

3. For the Fool’s Gold romances, you have invented a detailed history of the town and deep backgrounds for the characters, even down to the town book store owner. How does this help you delve deeper into your writing?

I want to create the sense for readers that Fool’s Gold is a real place, so I provide them with lots of bonus content at www.foolsgoldca.com. There, we have a map of the town, a history, a list of local festivals, a who’s who character chart, and plenty of between-the-books updates on what’s happening in the characters’ lives. If you’re a Fool’s Gold fan, you should visit the website to see all the new stuff we have there. I promise, it will enrich your reading experience. For example…

Fool’s Gold
has a very colorful (fictional) history, going back to pre-Columbian times. A group of Mayan women migrated north and established a matriarchal society along the shores of what is now Lake Ciara in Fool’s Gold. They were sick of all the virgin sacrifices, so they left. The Máa-zib tribe is the name we came up with, with the help of a Mayan-English dictionary. “Máa-zib” is a very rough translation/bastardization of “no boys,” after the words have been mangled by centuries and distance. The Máa-zib culture has a pretty fun impact on Fool’s Gold today. When the series started, there was a man shortage in Fool’s Gold. Was that because of an ancient Mayan curse? Who knows? Last year, a hero was ceremoniously “sacrificed” at the Máa-zib festival. And next year, six-year-old Future Warriors of the Máa-zib, Fool’s Gold’s twist on Scouts, will warm readers’ hearts.

4. You’re known for writing novels that always have a happy ending, no matter the turmoil the characters face along the way. What is the reason behind this? Would you ever consider writing a book without a happy ending?

No. Never. I don’t like to read books with unhappy endings, and I would never consider writing one. When I write a book, I invest my heart in the characters. If I left them in a bad place, they would haunt me for the rest of my life.

Life’s too short to read unhappy books.

Blog Tour Stop, Q & A & Contest: Genevieve Dewey’s First, I Love You

Welcome to my stop on the Litarti Literature Lover’s blog tour for Genevieve Dewey’s First, I Love You tour. Here is my Q & A with Ms. Dewey:

1. Do you ever experience writer’s block?

Yep. I usually take a walk, read a book, play with my kids or edit when that happens.

2. Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?

Everything I’ve written so far I’ve self-published. After I wrote First, I Love You I went looking for publishing companies and 98% of them were very clear that they weren’t accepting submissions for a mixed genre contemporary fiction book. Since it’s not Erotica, or New Adult, or Fantasy, I just figured I wouldn’t waste my time, or their time, and went with Smashwords and Amazon. I have ideas for some stories I haven’t written yet and don’t know if I will submit to a publisher or just continue to go Indie.

3. How does your family and others ‘in the story’ feel about the book? Do your family members have a favorite character?

Well, the ones who have read it tell me they enjoyed it, but I’m reasonably certain they have to say that. Ha! Most family members like Tommy best. It’s odd, but there seems to only be two camps with James, love him or hate him.

4. If you could describe The Downey Series in three words what would they be?

Three! Have you met me? I could never be so concise. Alright: It’s about love. (contractions don’t count right? ;P)

5. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?

Oh, I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “As an author I reserve the right to put anything you say or do in my next novel.” It’s impossible not to infuse your own life a bit into your writing. But mostly, it’s all made up.

Title: First, I Love You by Genevieve Dewey
The Downey Trilogy Book One
Publisher: CreateSpace
Genre: Contemporary Drama with romance subplot, Mystery/Suspense
Length: 301 pages

Summary:

If Mario Puzo and Jane Austen crossed the time-space continuum and mated, “First, I Love You” would be their literary baby. Imagine being a detective with a mobster for a father, or a mobster with a straight arrow, good cop for a son. This is a relationship that is tricky on its best day. Add in some well-meaning meddling from a mob princess sister, an arrogant DEA agent, and gangsters running a human trafficking ring and you have a recipe for a book that refuses to follow the rules. Told from the perspective and point of view of each the six main characters this is the first novel in a trilogy about love, loyalty, revenge and redemption.

Omaha Detective Tommy Gates has kept his gangster father at arm’s length his whole life. Mickey Downey has spent the better part of the last two decades trying to find ways to get back the son he lost through Witness Protection. Now Tommy has taken an opportunity to work on a Federal Human Trafficking Joint Task Force in Chicago where his father lives. Tommy’s sister Kiki and his mother Mary see this as an opportunity to build a relationship between the two. Tommy’s new DEA partner James Hoffman sees it as an opportunity to gain leverage over Mickey Downey. Tommy’s other partner, FBI Agent Ginny Sommers wants to keep Tommy’s family as far from the case as possible. When Kiki and James join forces, sparks fly and it sets fire to a maelstrom of unexpected consequences for everyone involved.

One part The Godfather, two parts Emma and a dash of Casablanca mixed together, “First, I Love You” isn’t a detective novel, a gangster novel, a mystery, a romance or a family saga. It’s a little of all of the above.

The Downey Trilogy Book Two
Publisher: DreateSpace

This introspective sequel to First, I Love You takes you deeper into a tale of interwoven roles, divided loyalties, and personal conflicts.

Detective Tommy Gates and Agent Ginny Sommers struggle to balance their growing personal relationship with their task of finding his father. Back home, Kiki Downey and James Hoffman are facing their own internal and external pressures. After Mary Gates is led on a different trail by Mickey’s Irish kin, they are all given pieces of a puzzle that it will take the whole family to solve. Interlocked within the narrative are glimpses into how Mickey Downey became the man he is today.

Blog Tour Stop: Alex Beecroft’s Blessed Isle, Q&A, and Contest

Welcome to everyone for the Blessed Isle blog tour. Blessed Isle is my Age of Sail m/m romance novella, which came out from Riptide on the 31st of December. I’m Alex Beecroft, and I’m taking over today thanks to the generosity of Book Reviews & More by Kathy. Here’s hoping I don’t do anything to cause them to regret it 😉

As a giveaway on this tour I’m offering either the two books of the Under the Hill series, or any other two ebooks in my back catalogue.

The giveaway works like this; with every post on the tour, I’ll ask a question about Blessed Isle. If you’re interested in entering the competition, email me the answer to the questions off blog (ie, not in the comments.) Then at the end of the tour, I’ll make a list of everyone who got all the answers right, and out of that list, I’ll pick a winner at random.

***Today’s question is “what semi-precious gemstone does Harry’s eyes resemble?” Email me the answer on alex@alexbeecroft.com***

And now some questions for me!

A quick quiz: Answer as fast as you can.

Favorite Song? Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers
Favorite Movie? Blade Runner
Favorite TV Show? Ultraviolet
Leather or Latex? Leather, definitely.
Naughty or Nice? Nice. Naughty is a whole load of trouble in the long run.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

With a rather silly dance of joy. Then my husband bought me a bottle of champagne and we polished that off between us.

Do you have any special writing rituals?

I am married to a man who builds computers, so we have a house full of machines he’s brought home and repaired. My writing ritual basically consists of stepping away from the computer I use for fun and social media, and going into another room where I have a computer I don’t use for anything but writing. When I’m in the spare bedroom, on that computer, I know there’s only one reason for it – I’m there to write.

Are you involved with any LGBTQ organizations?

I donate to and run the egroup WhosoeverRainbowfishUK, which is an online group associated with Whosoever Magazine. So many people seem to think you can either be gay or be Christian but not both. I think it’s important to know that you can be gay and still keep your faith, and that while clearly some Christians condemn you, not all do, and those who do so are wrong to do it.

Have you ever written to music?

No. I’ve certainly tried on several occasions, because it seems like such a nice idea and I love the thought of doing soundtracks for my books. But when it comes down to it, I find myself listening to the music instead of writing. It’s too distracting – I need silence instead.

Do you have a writing tip to share with our viewers?

It may surprise you that I didn’t figure this one out earlier, but my best ever piece of writing advice is ‘don’t stop writing until the book is finished.’ I had a habit of losing interest five chapters in, putting that story down and starting another, and then losing interest in that one too. So I have any number of starts of novels in my ‘never finished’ drawer. I only began to successfully write whole novels when I told myself I was forbidden to stop writing any particular story until it was finished. Now I finish everything I start, even if I hate it while I’m doing it. I often find that even the things I deeply resented while I was writing them, I enjoy reading when they’re finished. Basically “do not stop until it’s done!” Best writing tip ever.

Is there any topic you find taboo?

There are things that just don’t do it for me, and there are things that I would frown on in real life because they were damaging (incest, for example.) But I don’t think there’s anything that ought not to be written about. That would be like saying that there are things we ought not to think about. How can we have any rational opinions on things if we aren’t allowed to examine them by thinking and writing about them?

What do you think of the Fifty Shades of Grey craze?

I haven’t read it, and I understand that it portrays a relationship which is one of those things – like the rape fantasy – that might sound hot in fiction but wouldn’t be so great in real life. It’s not a kink I share. But at the same time, I think it’s quite hopefully that this is a generation in which a woman can get rich by writing a book that caters to the fantasies of women, and although society seems a bit baffled, nobody’s been taken to court or imprisoned yet. I wish I knew what had made it so popular, so I could do some of that myself!

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

In The Glass Floor, which I’m writing at the moment, one of my heroines has the superpower of being so extremely likeable that everyone wants to do things to please her. I initially thought this was a bit of a wimpish power, but oh boy is it proving useful! “Give myself up to the police? Will it make you smile? OK then!” I’m actually having to dream up ways in which to rein it in, otherwise everyone would just happily agree to do whatever she wanted. So I’ll have that, thanks!

Do you respond to all of your fan mail?

Absolutely! If someone emails me, I always email back. I haven’t had any letters, because I haven’t given out my address. Other writers advise never to reply to reviews – not even to just say thanks, so I don’t do that. But if someone takes the time to actually send me an email or drop me a comment on FB or LJ or wherever, talking about my books, of course I reply. It would be ungrateful not to.

Genre: Historical, M/M, Erotic, Romance
Length: 103 pages/Word count: 28,500

Summary:

A timeless love as dangerous as the sea.

For Captain Harry Thompson, the command of the prison transport ship HMS Banshee is his opportunity to prove his worth, working-class origins be damned. But his criminal attraction to his upper-crust First Lieutenant, Garnet Littleton, threatens to overturn all he’s ever worked for.

Lust quickly proves to be the least of his problems, however. The deadly combination of typhus, rioting convicts, and a monstrous storm destroys his prospects . . . and shipwrecks him and Garnet on their own private island. After months of solitary paradise, the journey back to civilization—surviving mutineers, exposure, and desertion—is the ultimate test of their feelings for each other.

These two very different men each record their story for an unfathomable future in which the tale of their love—a love punishable by death in their own time—can finally be told. Today, dear reader, it is at last safe for you to hear it all.

Note: This is a revised, stand-alone edition of the story originally published in the Hidden Conflict anthology in 2009.

Author Bio:

Alex Beecroft was born in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and grew up in the wild countryside of the English Peak District. She studied English and Philosophy before accepting employment with the Crown Court where she worked for a number of years. Now a stay-at-home mum and full time author, Alex lives with her husband and two daughters in a little village near Cambridge and tries to avoid being mistaken for a tourist.

Alex is only intermittently present in the real world. She has lead a Saxon shield wall into battle, toiled as a Georgian kitchen maid, and recently taken up an 800 year old form of English folk dance, but she still hasn’t learned to operate a mobile phone.

You can find Alex on her website, Facebook,Twitter or her Goodreads page.
