Summary:

An alpha hero’s attraction to the one woman he can’t have could draw him into a killer’s snare in the sizzling new novel from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster

Charismatic bar owner Rowdy Yates isn’t the kind of man women say no to. So when he approaches waitress Avery Mullins, he fully expects to get her number. However, the elusive beauty has her reasons for keeping her distance—including a past that might come back to haunt them both.

Avery spends her nights working for tips…and trying to forget the secret Rowdy is determined to unearth. But when history threatens to repeat itself, Avery grows to rely on Rowdy’s protective presence. As the sparks between them ignite, she will be forced to choose between the security she’s finally found…and the passion she’s always wanted.

The Review:

Getting Rowdy is the sexy yet sweet third installment in Lori Foster’s Love Undercover series. Bar owner Rowdy Yates and bartender Avery Mullins finally find their happily ever after but they have a few obstacles to overcome along the way. Avery is going to have to confront the past she has been running away from while Rowdy has to face the emotional wreckage from his childhood.

Rowdy Yates oozes sex appeal, he is über charming and women are drawn to him like flies to honey. He is always upfront that he is a no-strings, one night stand kind of guy and Avery Mullins is not planning on becoming his next conquest. When an incident at the bar leaves Rowdy in need of some tender loving care, Avery is the logical choice to stay with him and their relationship slowly evolves from friends to lovers.

OK, I admit I was not too sure about Rowdy in the beginning. The opening scene pretty much left me wondering what the heck Avery saw in him and I knew that warming up to him was not going to be easy. I am glad that I kept an open mind about him but my feelings about him were conflicted for a good portion of the novel. Having said that, Rowdy is a good guy, very protective of his loved ones and he does have a lot of great qualities. He is very slow to open up to Avery, but once he does, the healing process begins. And watching him figure out his feelings for Avery? Sooo sweet and emotionally satisfying.

I liked Avery right from the beginning, and I admired how she stood her ground with Rowdy. She was definitely attracted to him, but she wanted more from him than a one night stand. In her own way, she is just as protective as Rowdy and that makes her reluctant to discuss her past. While Avery wants to know what haunts Rowdy, she patiently waits until he is ready to talk about his demons.

There are a couple of secondary story arcs in addition to Avery and Rowdy’s romance. A chance encounter with an abused child really showcases Rowdy’s softer and more vulnerable side. It also gives fans of the series a chance to catch up with Alice and Reese (from Bare It All).

The other storyline revolves around the secret from Avery’s past. There is plenty of buildup to the stalker plot and while I had my suspicions about who was behind it, I could not figure out why. There were a few surprises about the culprit but the resolution of this part of the storyline felt rushed.

Overall, Getting Rowdy is a fast-paced romance with a full cast of engaging characters. Old and new fans of the Love Undercover series are sure to enjoy this newest addition and Lori Foster expertly sets the stage for Dash and Margo’s story, Dash of Peril.

The Review:

Fiancé by Friday is a fast-paced and engaging romance that is also quite suspenseful. Although it is the third installment in Catherine Bybee’s Weekday Brides series, it can be read as a standalone story.

Gwen Harrison may be a British royalty, but she is very down to earth, sensible and likable. She has been attracted to bodyguard Neil MacBain for quite some time, but theirs is strictly a platonic relationship. Tired of waiting for Neil to make a move, Gwen works up the courage to confront him about their attraction and challenges him to make the next move.

Gwen is the model of grace under pressure while she and Neil track down the person who has been stalking her. Life on the run is way out of her comfort zone, but this privileged and level-headed woman is more than up for the challenge. While she does not blindly follow Neil’s orders, Gwen is definitely not a too stupid to live heroine whose ridiculous actions put her in danger. She keeps her wits about her and calmly comes up with a pretty ingenious plan when she finds herself in a dangerous situation.

Neil is the epitome of the strong, silent type. A quintessential loner, he is quite mysterious and close mouthed about his past. Neil is plagued by (misplaced) guilt over his disastrous last mission while on active duty. When a fellow Marine tracks him down following the death of one of their friends, Neil realizes Gwen’s stalker and his past are inexplicably linked. Fearing for Gwen’s safety, Neil seeks help from the person he trusts most and he then attempts to lure the killer out of hiding.

The mystery element of Fiancé by Friday is quite compelling and keeps the story moving at a brisk pace. It is an effective plot device that brings Neil and Gwen together and takes their relationship in a very surprising direction. I was pretty stymied for good deal of the novel about who was behind the stalking, but once the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place, I was able to discern who was behind the plot fairly easily.

Fiancé by Friday is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining novel with genuinely likable and realistic characters. The overall plot is well-developed and quite engrossing. The longstanding history Gwen and Neil creates amazing sexual tension and lends credibility to their romance. It is a delightful addition to Catherine Bybee’s wonderfully unique Weekday Brides series and I am eagerly anticipating the next book.

Excerpt

Eliza flagged down a waitress and ordered a martini. “I see not a lot has changed,” she said after the waitress left.

“What do you mean?” Gwen asked.

“We’re sitting in a bar and your giant shadow is lurking in the back of the building.” Eliza tossed a peanut in her mouth.

“My shadow?”

Eliza looked o the right of the bar. “Yeah. The man who acts like you’re a job but can’t seem to leave you alone. If it was anyone other than Neil I’d be afraid he was a stalker.”

Gwen twisted around in her chair. Sure enough, perched at the edge of a seat on the far side of the bar, sat Neil.

“What’s he doing here?”

His eyes found hers for a brief moment before she looked away.

“I think that’s obvious.”

Her back teeth started to grind. “I don’t’ need a babysitter.”

“I don’t know, Gwen. The last time we sat in a bar I remember a certain someone getting drunk and a couple of other someones getting into a fight.”

She’d never live that down. Gwen and Eliza went to blow off steam in a Texas bar. The cowboys ewre full of “yes, ma’am” and “howdy, darlin’.” They danced and carried on…and yes, she drank a little too much. When one of the cowboys mistakenly took her smile as an invitation for intimacy, Neil erupted form the bar to teach the cowboy the meaning of the word no.

It was the first time Neil had defended her honor, and though she hated to admit it, she got a kick out of how ticked off he became when another man looked at her. “That was last year.”

“What’s changed since then?”

Nothing! It didn’t matter how much she flirted with the man, or how obvious she was about her attraction Neil didn’t bite.

“Everything.” Gwen stood, ready to put Neil I his place. “If you’ll both excuse me for a minute.”

She pushed her way through the crowd as if on a collision course with Neil. He kept his lips in a thin line as she approached and gripped the longneck bottle at his side. Slipping between the woman on the stool next to him and Neil’s massive frame, Gwen slapped a hand on her hip and growled. “What are you doing here?”

He blinked, once and picked up his beer. “Having a drink.”

She wanted to scream. “Having a drink,” she repeated.

He tilted the bottle back, took a swig.

“I know what you’re doing, Neil. And I don’t like it. I don’t want or need a bodyguard.”

“That’s debatable.”

If stomping her foot would knock some sense into him, she’d stomp better than a farm girl in a vineyard.

Poking a finger into his chest, she moved closer. “Do you have any idea how difficult it is to have a love life with a tow-hundred-thirty-pound bodybuilder standing in my way?”

A muscle in his jaw tightened. “Two hundred and fifty.”

“Ahhh!” She did scream now.

He lifted his beer again, but before he could take a swig, Gwen grabbed it from his fingers and tilted it back herself.

In a move that would make Eliza and Karen proud, she pushed the empty beer bottle back into his hand and slid between his thighs.

His jaw twitched again.

The strong musky scent that was pure Neil invaded her senses. She dropped one hand to his thigh and left it there. “This is how I see it, Neil. You have two choices. Either back off or step up.”

Gwen squeezed his thigh before vacating his personal space and marching back to the girls. A satisfied smile stretched over her face.

Blog Tour Stop, Contest & Review: freefall by Susan Rae

Author Bio:

I write, basically, because I just can’t help myself. I can’t resist the challenge of taking the intriguing characters and storylines that pop into my head and fleshing them out into compelling manuscripts. Romantic suspense is a natural to me, because it allows me to combine my love of a good mystery with a passionate love story. It also lets me express my appreciation for the outdoors in the settings which I recreate on the page.

My first novel, heartbeats, is a story of romance and danger set against the background of busy Chicago and the quiet, rural cornfields of northern Illinois. heartbeats has garnered numerous awards, including RWA Golden Heart Finalist for Best Romantic Suspense Novel and Best First Book by First Coast Romance Writers.

In freefall, my second novel, danger and suspense are juxtaposed against the tranquil valley of Sylvan Lake (fictitious) in the Kettle Moraine Forest and the sun-dappled waters of Door County, Wisconsin.

When I’m not sketching characters or working out plot problems, you might find me on the golf course working on my handicap. I also enjoy traveling around the country seeking out new settings for my novels with my husband and my empty nest puppies, Ginger and Nikute.

Summary:

Freak accident, or attempted murder? Kate needs answers to her brother’s plane crash, but can she trust undercover DEA agent “Spike” Larsen to deliver them?

Kate Reynolds’s quest to unravel the mystery of her brother’s plane crash throws her into the turbulent wake of suave pilot/mechanic Everett Larsen. His gray gaze ignites in her a
passion as powerful as a jet stream, but it also sparks a memory—one she can’t quite reel in. A bitter divorce has taught her to trust no man, so how can she trust Larsen?

Drawn by a cryptic message Keith left on his answering machine, Everett “Spike” Larsen flies to Milwaukee for answers, but he is unprepared for the torrent of emotion he feels
when he sees Kate—after his wife’s death, he thought himself no longer capable of such emotion. He is afraid to give into his feelings for Kate—afraid to love again. But when
Kate insists on helping out at her brother’s aircraft repair shop and gets too close to the truth, he is even more afraid to lose her.

The Review:

What caused the plane crash that leaves Kate Reynolds’ brother Keith in a coma? Was it an accident? Or was it sabotage? Find out in freefall, an intriguing mystery by author Susan Rae.

freefall is an interesting mystery with a bit of a romantic angle. While helping keep her brother’s business running while Keith is in a coma, Kate Reynolds discovers a few inconsistencies in his business and personal life. Equally suspicious of the cause of the accident, ex army buddy Everett Larsen is determined to find out what happened to Keith. With a few misgivings, Kate reluctantly teams up with Everett to uncover the truth.

Kate and Everett are well developed and likable characters. However, I was surprised that Kate would so easily believe the worst about her brother. Kate and Everett find it difficult to trust one another in spite of their growing feelings. They continually keep important information from each another and Kate’s lack of trust in Everett puts them in harm’s way.

Despite the fact that some of the characters’ thoughts and dialogue are a little dated and unnatural sounding, freefall is a fairly well written novel. The plot is well-conceived but it is fairly easy to piece together the mystery. However Susan Rae does an excellent job at throwing in a few unexpected twists and turns.

All in all, an entertaining novel with a pretty steamy romance, freefall is an easy to read novel that fans of romantic suspense will enjoy.

Excerpt from Mr. Floyd’s Hard Drive:

It was sheer agony, trying to avoid meeting Nadia Yohn’s eyes. I knew that if I did, everyone in the room would see the spark and flash. I couldn’t believe it wasn’t already obvious.

But we were the only ones aware of it.

I sat on our side of the table alongside the senior homicide detective, Carl Stimple, and Lori Wiese from the district attorney’s office. Across from us sat Nadia and her attorney, Tyler Beckenridge. It was hard to discern which was more highly polished—the walnut tabletop or Breckenridge’s pink scalp.

Mr. Floyd’s Bio:

Bill Floyd lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina, with his wife, Amy, and his dog, Max. His first published novel, The Killer’s Wife, won the Mary Higgins Clark Award for 2009. Floyd can often be foundin dark music clubs listening to a variety of underground bands. His taste in fiction runs the gamut from literary to genre, with no apologies for either. He is currently working on a novel about secrets and the costs of keeping them. A sampling of his flash fiction can be found at www.billfloydbooks.com.

Excerpt from J.T. Ellison’s The Number of Man:

It began in a single moment, the briefest of connections. She, in pigtails, a miniature towheaded autocrat, ruling the playground as if it were her kingdom. He, sitting on the swings, the new boy, watching her cross the playground toward him, shoulders squared, prepared for battle. He was an outsider, an unknown, and therefore dangerous, and she needed to determine his loyalties. Only eight, he had been at the receiving end of this conversation several times; his mother wasn’t the most upright woman, had a tendency to follow her latest boyfriend when her previous love discarded her.

Ms. Ellison’s Bio:

J.T. Ellison is the international award-winning author of seven critically acclaimed novels, multiple short stories and has been published in over twenty countries. A former White House staffer, she has worked extensively with the Metro Nashville Police, the FBI and various other law enforcement organizations to research her novels. She lives in Nashville with her husband and a poorly trained cat, and is hard at work on her next novel. Visit Ms. Ellison’s website for more insight into her wicked imagination, or follow her on Twitter (@Thrillerchick).

Q & A with Ms. Ellison:

What is your guilty pleasure? People Magazine, facials, uninterrupted reading time, Gossip Girl

Describe your favorite meal. Italian, hands down. Preferably in country. But I’m not bad making it at home. Proscuitto and melon, caesar salad, papardelle with mushrooms in white truffle oil or lasagna or gnocchi al Sorrentino, tiramisu, an excellent red.

If you were not a writer, what would be your career? An architect, maybe, or fighter pilot. Or FBI.

If you could time travel, which year would be your destination? Anyplace where bathing was popular… seriously, probably Florence or Rome during Leonardo’s time.

What inspired your contribution to LOVE IS MURDER? It’s been brewing for years. I wrote a draft in 2006, couldn’t make it work, and shelved it until now. I felt sorry for Michael, and his delusions, and wanted to explore what it might be like to think someone you’re in love with loves you back.

Excerpt from William Simon’s Spider’s Tango:

Here’s a piece of advice you won’t find in any manual, leaflet, monograph, self-help book, or national talk show: when an agent with the FBI’s Violent Crimes Unit opens an email, then spends the next ten minutes vomiting in the men’s room, do not under any circumstances lean across the desk and look at the screen…

Mr. Simon’s Bio:

Since 2002, William Simon has been the owner and lead investigator for a licensed firm that handles computer forensics and electronic evidence exclusively. This work has led to a few interesting experiences.

He has a ridiculously broad-range DVD collection, listens to little else but music from the 1950s, still reads Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and is proud of the fact that he saw both Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin—live and on stage—in Las Vegas, many years ago.

Earlier works published under the pseudonym “Will Graham” include Street Heat and Sometimes, There Really Are Monsters Under the Bed, both available in ebook editions. Spider’s Dance, a full-length novel featuring Nicholas White, is also available.

Visit Mr. Simon’s website for more info.

Q & A with Mr. Simon:

What is your guilty pleasure? “Drive-In” type movies, and a soft spot for the old Universal Studios Monsters. Thanks to the advent of home video, so many classics and forgotten movies are now available.

Describe your favorite meal. Italian resturants always get my attention.

If you were not a writer, what would be your career? Probably something in Federal law enforcement; family trade, so to speak.

If you could time travel, which year would be your destination? Victorian London, with antibiotics. I’d have had the chance to catch Jack the Ripper.

What inspired your contribution to LOVE IS MURDER? I’ve worked as a computer forensic investigator since 2002, and some of the cases have been less than pleasant. I’m not quite sure what triggered the entire plot, but the background was in place and it seemed logical to ‘write what I knew’.
