Summary:

Embrace the danger.

Sean Rush is an adrenaline junkie. That’s why he was in the Army, why he steals and races classic muscle cars . . . and why he can’t stay away from bad boy Ryker, a Havoc Motorcycle Club lieutenant. Fortunately, Ryker can’t seem to stay away from Sean—he’s spent the last eight months breaking into Sean’s apartment and stealing into his bed, leaving Sean physically satisfied but increasingly restless.

Sean has always avoided relationships. He likes to come and go without being controlled. And Ryker is possibly the most controlling man he’s ever known. Still, he finds that he wants more from Ryker than their silent nighttime encounters.

Then one of Sean’s thefts goes bad, and Ryker’s protective instincts kick into overdrive. He takes Sean to the Havoc compound, determined to keep him safe. But Sean’s past threatens the safety of Havoc—and everything Ryker holds dear. Worse, Ryker’s hiding secrets of his own. Soon it’s obvious that the adrenaline rush can’t keep them together anymore. But maybe love can.

The Review:

Havoc, S.E. Jakes’ new series centered around a motorcycle club, is off to a strong beginning with the first installment, Running Wild. The storyline is refreshingly unique with a few unexpected twists and turns. The lead protagonists, Sean Rush and Ryker, are complex and a bit damaged, but these flaws and imperfections add to their appeal. The sex is über hot and erotic, but there is always an emotional component to the scenes that adds depth to their somewhat complicated relationship.

For the past eight months, Ryker and Sean have been involved in a super sexy but rather confusing non-relationship that is scorching hot and immensely satisfying.  However lately, Sean is feeling a little restless and wants more from his enigmatic nighttime visitor. He has no way of contacting Ryker but when a favor for a friend takes an unexpectedly dangerous turn, Ryker is quick to whisk Sean away to the safety of the Havoc motorcycle club compound. Their relationship continues to heat up, but Sean’s unresolved issues, his continued loyalty to his friend and a dangerous car theft ring threaten their future.

Ryker and Sean are richly developed, vibrant characters, and of the two, Sean is the most fragile. His troubled childhood led to stealing cars and street racing, but since his return to town after getting out of the army, he has been keeping out of trouble working as a mechanic. Sean is still struggling with PTSD and he has yet to come to terms with the guilt he feels about a close friend’s combat related death. He is also very uncertain when it comes to his bewildering relationship with Ryker and his insecurities come between them on numerous occasions.

Since Running Wild is written in first person from Sean’s point of view, it is a little more difficult to get a good grasp on Ryker and his motivations where Sean is concerned. He has a strong and rather forceful personality, but he is also quite caring and very protective. He takes the dominant role in the bedroom, but this perfectly complements Sean’s need to give up a little control. Sean does a fairly decent job of peeling back Ryker’s many layers but he unexpectedly uncovers a secret that casts doubt on their entire relationship.

Running Wild is engrossing but it moves at an unhurried pace.  The different storylines eventually merge together and seemingly unrelated events eventually intertwine. The secondary characters are well-developed, colorful and interesting. A lot of the communication between Ryker and Sean occurs during sex, and their scenes are exquisitely detailed and deliciously erotic.

With this first novel of her new series, S.E. Jakes focuses more on the characters and relies less on action to carry the story and I hope future works continue along the same vein. Very well done and I am eager to read Running Blind, the next book in the Havoc series.

Summary:

Sometimes falling in love is the most dangerous thing of all.

Blue is a thief who lives for adrenaline and danger. And when he meets Mick, a mercenary, he’s hit with a buzz of attraction like the rush of a high-rise job without a safety rope. But after making plans to get together, Mick leaves him hanging, and Blue vows never again.

A year later, Mick watches helplessly as Blue stumbles into the middle of one of Mick’s jobs. Risking his cover and their lives, Mick saves Blue and cares for him as he recuperates, but neither man has any idea how to handle the intimacy this forces them into.

Once Blue is safe, Mick redoubles his efforts to take down the drug lord responsible—and disappears. Blue goes after him, determined to return the favor and rescue the man he loves, no matter the cost.

This is a revised second edition of the originally self-published title.

The Review:

Do you enjoy smokin’ hot sex between two alpha males? Yes? Boy do I have a recommendation for you! Free Falling by SE Jakes is a lust-filled adventure that just oozes testosterone as Blue and Mick give in to their passionate desire for one another.

Blue and Mick are the type of heroes that I love. Strong, but with just a hint of vulnerability that makes them realistic and sympathetic. Both Blue and Mick have trust issues and the nature of their jobs forces them to keep free of emotional entanglements. Mick is overprotective and will go to any lengths to keep Blue safe. And Blue? He was so mischievous that I just could not help but love him.

Free Falling’s plot is quite unique and beautifully executed. The story is fast-paced and a wonderful mix of emotions, action and incendiary sex. Some of the scenes are incredibly poignant and beautifully showcase the softer side of Blue. Mick’s repartee with his co-worker Prophet is delightfully witty.

One of my favorite authors of BDSM M/M romance, SE Jakes once again delivers a credible story with characters that are flawed but immensely appealing. I am eagerly awaiting Prophet’s book-he is deliciously enigmatic and I cannot wait to learn what makes him tick.

The Demanding Ways of a Series Character by SE Jakes

For me, writing a loosely connected series has been a funny thing. From the very first, the heroes of the Men Of Honor series would not shut up. I mean, all of them. ALL OF THEM. They’d pop into dialogue when they had no business even opening their mouths, never mind being in the book. I’d find myself writing their descriptions when I had no business doing so. For instance, Paulo was supposed to be a throwaway character, an investigator who simply…investigated. But he really wanted to investigate Law and I couldn’t stop it. Even though I knew Law (aka LC) was meant for Styx, Paulo kept telling me to be more open-minded.

And Rex and Sawyer? Did they really need to be at that party? Well, judging by what happened several books later, I guess so.

The way I look at it, the series seemed to unfold like it might in real life. Things overlap (like Tomcat’s story and Law’s story and even Glen’s story which all happen around the same time frame) because no one lives in a vacuum. There’s a sense of community. These men know each other through the military / special ops / CIA / FBI / DEA (you get the picture) communities. Some of the men know each other because they’re Doms. And some of the stories connect because of the way they unfold.

For instance, I wrote most of Bound For Keeps while I was writing Bound By Honor. Looking back, I understand why, because both had a little bit of magic coming into play. In Bound By Honor, it was Jesse telling Damon in his own way that it was okay to move on. I felt like he knew Tanner would be the absolute right fit for Damon. In Bound For Keeps, the inn plays a special role in bringing lovers together.

Bound For Keeps is in the tradition of the series, but I’d call this probably the most stand-alone of the entire series (next to Ties that Bind) – of course, the themes are there: angst, military men, some BDSM play. But the men you meet in BFK – Keith, Reed and Shane—are all new to you. Ménages can be tricky to write, but when the men are so perfect for one another, that helps a lot.

You’ll also meet Prophet in this book, because talk about a character that will not stay out of my head. He plays a minor role in not one, but two of my books and of course I had to give him a series of his own, which starts next month. In that way, even though I write different series, my characters, my worlds, all stay connected. That appears to be as much the choice of my characters as it is mine, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

So, talk to me about series books. Love them? Hate them? Do you get frustrated? How long do you like your series to last? Tell me your favorite series. (and no, you don’t have to answer all of that :). Comment for a chance to win a Nook or Kindle copy of Bound For Keeps!

They can’t deny the attraction…or the danger…

Men of Honor, Book 5

Since losing their beloved third to cancer, Keith Masters and Johnny Lou Reed haven’t thought about filling the void in their lives with anyone else. Until a stormy Christmas Eve, when a half-frozen, newly discharged Army Ranger shows up on their doorstep—with no memory of who he is or how he got there.

The former Marine in Keith is suspicious that he can’t turn up any information about Shane anywhere, not even an address. Direct questioning will have to wait until they’ve gotten the boy well.

Shane knows it’s only a matter of time before Keith and Reed figure out his past. And when they learn the depth and the darkness of the secrets he holds, he could get them all killed.

In the heat of the dark winter nights, the three men discover a passion that heals the gaping wounds in their hearts. And Shane wonders, despite the danger hot on his heels, how he will ever bear to leave…

Product Warnings: Contains secrets, undercover operations and three hot, alpha military men who can set a cold winter night on fire.

Summary:

The danger that drew them together could send them over the edge…

Men of Honor, Book 4

Playing the role of enforcer in the Killers motorcycle club, all CIA operative Clint “Tomcat” Sommers has to do is make sure he has a body to show for his work. Thanks to his ability to move stealthily and easily between the two worlds, the CIA is damned close to making one of its biggest MC gang busts.

Two years undercover have taken their toll, but there’s no backing out now. Tomcat’s only reprieve from the pressure is fantasizing about the newest member of the gang.

Worry for his cousin’s involvement in the Killers drove Navy SEAL Jace Reynolds to agree to infiltrate the gang to do some short-term surveillance for the FBI. The deal: do the job, and his cousin gets witness protection. When he meets Tomcat, though, his fantasies kick into overdrive. Meeting men while on active duty is tough. Acting on his desires within the club could have deadly consequences.

Despite the risks, Tomcat’s and Jace’s off hours flare hotter than a full-throttle burnout. But the smoke is bound to attract unwanted attention. And when Tomcat suddenly disappears, the secrets both warriors keep could send one of them to the grave.

Product Warnings: Contains two hot men undercover—and under the covers. Both with secrets under wraps that could cause everything to unravel in the deadliest way imaginable. If you’re inspired to try something new on a motorcycle, go for it. Just don’t blame the author for any pulled muscles.
