Title: Good Bad Girl by Alice Feeney
Publisher: Flatiron Books
Genre: Contemporary, Domestic Thriller
Length: 310 pages

Summary:

Sometimes bad things happen to good people, so good people have to do bad things.

Our Queen of Twists, bestselling author of Daisy Darker and Rock Paper Scissors Alice Feeney, returns with another thrilling mystery filled with drama and her trademark surprises.

Twenty years after a baby is stolen from a stroller, a woman is murdered in a care home. The two crimes are somehow linked, and a good bad girl may be the key to discovering the truth.

Edith may have been tricked into a nursing home, but at eighty-years-young, she’s planning her escape. Patience works there, cleaning messes and bonding with Edith, a kindred spirit. But Patience is lying to Edith about almost everything.

Edith’s own daughter, Clio, won’t speak to her. And someone new is about to knock on Clio’s door…and their intentions aren’t good.

With every reason to distrust each other, the women must solve a mystery with three suspects, two murders, and one victim. If they do, they might just find out what happened to the baby who disappeared, the mother who lost her, and the connections that bind them.

In the style of Daisy Darker and Rock Paper Scissors, Good Bad Girl is a thriller in which nobody can be trusted and the twists come fast and furious.

Book Talk: What have you been reading lately?

Welcome to this week’s Book Talk!

This first book I read:

With Every Memory by Janine Rosche: 4.5 stars. An emotional novel of healing. This incredible novel tackles some difficult topics with sensitivity and grace. The characters characters are wonderfully developed with realistic flaws that are relatable. The storyline has plenty of depth and substance and features unexpected plot twists. An excellent novel that I highly recommend.

I jumped into C.J. Box’s Joe Pickett series with book 16 with plans to go back and start at the beginning. A Kindle challenge prompted me to read book 1 this week and I ended up reading books 2-4 too! So while I’ll give my individual ratings, my thoughts will be on the series as a whole.

It is nice to go back and fill in some of the details from the earlier mysteries. While I enjoyed the first four books, I felt like the series really hit its stride in book three.

Game Warden Joe Pickett is flawed with a strong moral compass. His wife and daughters are as well developed as Joe. The secondary characters who are regulars in the series are not as fully developed as Joe, his family and his sidekick, Nate Romanowski. There is plenty of heart-pounding action that keeps the stories moving at a brisk pace. The various settings and seasons leap vibrantly to life. Although it doesn’t bother me, the subject matter can be a bit gory. C.J. Box brings jaw-dropping twists and turns to each mystery.

Open Season: 4 stars.
Savage Run: 4 stars.
Winterkill: 4.5 stars.
Trophy Hunt: 4.5 stars.

When an army vet becomes a firefighter in small-town Colorado, the flames of an old love reignite in this sweet romance by bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray

In Woodland Park, a small town nestled in the foothills of Pikes Peak, Anderson Kelly and Chelsea Davis were once the high school “it” couple—the star quarterback and the valedictorian. They broke up when Anderson joined the army and one poor decision at a fraternity party changed Chelsea’s life. Now, she works long shifts in a senior center to support her nine-year-old son, Jack.

After multiple tours in Afghanistan, Anderson has changed, too—physically scarred but mentally strong—and he decides to move back to Woodland Park. Anderson and Chelsea steer clear of each other to avoid reopening old wounds, until they are forced to reconnect through the senior center. They soon discover that the love they once shared never completely vanished. But it will take a fire, a dangerous collision, and the love of one little boy to help Anderson and Chelsea see that the future they’ve always yearned for is in sight…

A Woodland Park Firefighters Romance Book Two
Publisher: Berkley
Genre: Contemporary, Romance

Summary:

Romance blossoms in the Colorado foothills in this sweet romance by New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray

Former Army captain Greg Tebo loves his new life in Woodland Park. In the two years since he joined the WPFD, he’s gained a reputation as a fearless firefighter, and after being stationed all around the country and overseas, he can’t wait to settle down with a wife and kids.

When a call comes in about a possible heart attack at the scene of a fire at the Garden Center, Greg assumes they’re going to be helping an elderly customer—not the beautiful, feisty proprietor in her late twenties. Kristen Werner has been determined to pretend everything is fine. She refuses to leave the company she’s carefully nurtured and move home to her loving but meddling family in Houston. Since her devastating diagnosis caused her fiancé to dump her, she’s given up on love and thrown herself into cultivating her blooming business instead—even if the hard work further weakens her heart.

Greg is drawn to Kristen’s vibrant, independent spirit and hopes romance will flower. But she’s had enough trouble with her heart to last a lifetime, and can’t trust Greg not to break it—especially if he finds out she can never give him the houseful of children he longs for….

Genre: Contemporary, Romance

Title: Cold Day Dawning by Thom Collins
Jagged Shores Book Four

Danger comes in the cold of morning.

It should be the perfect weekend away. Dalton Caine makes the long journey to Nyemouth to attend a party hosted by his sister. Catherine is estranged from most of the family, but Dalton feels the time has come to build bridges between them. Things don’t turn out how he wants, however, when Catherine gives him a cold reception at the party. But the evening is not a complete waste of time when he meets local photographer Antoni.

Following a near-fatal attack six months earlier, Antoni has struggled with his physical and mental recovery. Catherine’s party is the first time he has been out at night since then, and he’s ready for an early exit when he meets Dalton. The stranger is warm, friendly and incredibly handsome. When Antoni overcomes his reservations and accepts a drink at Dalton’s hotel, it could be the start of something new for them both.

Despite the joy of fresh romance, things soon take a darker turn. The morning after the party, Catherine’s boyfriend reports her missing. Dalton isn’t initially concerned. Catherine has disappeared of her own will before, and he’s more interested in getting to know Antoni, but the men soon find themselves at the centre of a twisted mystery, one that puts both of their lives at risk.

Reader advisory: This book contains violence, murder, PTSD, memories of a child in danger and mental illness. Although it can be read as a stand-alone, this book is best read as part of a series.
