Summary:

THEY CALL HIM THE DUKE OF MURDER…

The gossips whisper that the new Duke of Murdoch is a brute, a murderer, and even worse—a Scot. They say he should never be trusted alone with a woman. But Megan Windham sees in Hamish something different, someone different.

No one was fiercer at war than Hamish MacHugh, though now the soldier faces a whole new battlefield: a London Season. To make his sisters happy, he’ll take on any challenge—even letting their friend Miss Windham teach him to waltz. Megan isn’t the least bit intimidated by his dark reputation, but Hamish senses that she’s fighting battles of her own. For her, he’ll become the warrior once more, and for her, he might just lose his heart.

Review:

The Trouble with Dukes by Grace Burrowes is an entertaining, sweet historical romance.  While this is  the first novel in the Windham Brides series, I strongly encourage readers to read the Windham series since MANY of the secondary characters from these previous books figure prominently in The Trouble with Dukes.

Hamish MacHugh is dismayed to discover he is now the Duke of Murdoch. He wants nothing more than to return to his beloved Scotland but alas, he must put the needs of his family first.  He is hoping his stay in England will be brief as his beloved sisters, Edana and Rhona, replenish their wardrobe and enjoy as many social gatherings as possible.  Hamish’s wartime reputation precedes him which makes him quite uncomfortable at the numerous balls and parties he must attend with his sisters and brother, Colin.  Gruff and plainspoken, Hamish makes quite a few social gaffes as he tries to navigate the complicated world of the British aristocracy but he is also rather softhearted when it comes to the people he cares about.

Megan Windham  is a lovely young woman with poor eyesight and a giving heart. She finds herself in the unenviable position of fighting off the attentions of Sir Fletcher Pilkington, a loathsome suitor  from a suitable family.  She is grateful to Hamish when he steps in to aid her during an unpleasant encounter with Pilkington and her respect for the troubled war hero grows deeper each time they meet. Megan is quite taken with the attractive Scotsman but she is caught in an untenable situation with Pilkington that could ruin her and her sisters’ reputations if the truth about her youthful mistake were ever to be revealed.

Megan and Hamish are a wonderful couple who find it quite easy to confide in one another.  Their scenes together are a wonderful mix of delightful banter and thoughtful exchanges about their lives and simmering attraction. However, with Hamish planning to return to Scotland as soon as possible, he sees no future for the two of them.  But Megan’s extended family makes it impossible for him to say no to their “invitations” and the more time he spends with her, the more smitten he becomes.  After she confesses the mess she has gotten herself into with Pilkington, Hamish comes up with a plan to get her out of trouble.  After executing their scheme to rescue her from her detestable suitor’s clutches, Hamish and Megan’s relationship deepens but is Fletcher truly out of the picture?

While The Trouble with Dukes is an overall enjoyable novel, it is difficult to understand why Megan would not tell her family about the situation with Fletcher.  The Windham family is obviously quite close and they are also very influential so it would make sense for her to ask them for their assistance with her problem.  Pilkington’s interest in other heiresses is well-known so it seems impossible that NO ONE in her family is the least bit suspicious about his motives when he sets his sights on Megan.  Even more unbelievable is the fact that her parents seem to be encouraging the match!  This entire part of the storyline is fairly ridiculous and somewhat unbelievable.

The inclusion of the other Windham characters is rather bewildering if you have not read the Windham series.  Between the use of proper names, titles and numerous nicknames, it is virtually impossible to keep up with who everyone is and who their spouses are.  While fans of the other series will enjoy catching up with favorite characters from earlier novels, newcomers might them hopelessly confusing.

The Trouble with Dukes is a charming historical romance with a cast of appealing characters.  The storyline is interesting but the pacing of the novel is a little slow. Although a bit flawed, it is a nice beginning to Grace Burrowes’ Windham Brides series.

Summary:

He loves her, she loves him not…?

In the third novel of The Sweetest Kisses series, single mom Sidonie Lindstrom has her hands full with a troubled foster son, an abrupt adjustment to country living, and an unforeseen lack of funds. When her taciturn neighbor, MacKenzie Knightley, repeatedly offers practical help, Sid reminds herself she’s not interested in the neighbor-despite his kindness, pragmatism and quiet charm. MacKenzie sees the vulnerability beneath her pride, and he’s determined to change her mind…

Review:

Kiss Me Hello is the final installment of Grace Burrowes’ marvelous Sweetest Kisses series and I am very sad that I have to say goodbye to the Knightley brothers 🙁 . However, this last novel in the trilogy is absolutely FANTASTIC and I eagerly devoured every delicious word, savored each toe-curling kiss and cherished every heartwarming scene.

Oldest brother Mackenzie “Mac” Knightley has been a very intriguing character throughout the two previous novels.  He is very devoted to his family, but he gives up little information about his private life. Mac keeps himself busy but he is a little lonely and with both his brothers now in love, he sees firsthand what he is missing out on. While Mac has what he believes are very compelling reasons for remaining single, his decade long dating hiatus comes to an abrupt end when he meets Sidonie “Sid” Lindstrom. He is immediately smitten by Sid but she is carrying a few secrets and scars from her past and she is also struggling to begin a new life for herself and her teenage foster son, Luis.

Sid is extremely reluctant to become involved with Mac. Not because she does not like him, but because she has an awful lot of worries to contend with. She is grieving the loss of her brother and she is stressed over how long it is taking to settle his estate. Sid is also worn out from trying to make ends meet and worrying about how well Luis is fitting in within the small community. Adding to her stress is a by the book social worker whose indifference to Luis’ best interests means Sid has yet another fight on her hands.

Mac and Sid eventually settle into an easygoing friendship that slowly becomes a sizzling hot romance. They find it surprisingly easy to confide in one another as they transition from friends to lovers but Mac continues to keep a fairly big secret from her. When she finally discovers what he has been hiding, Sid is not sure if she will be able to forgive him for not being honest with her. Mac knows he made a big mistake by not being upfront with her, and he makes every effort to show her how truly sorry he is, but will Sid give him and their relationship a second chance?

Kiss Me Hello is an enchanting love story with an exceptionally appealing cast of likable characters. This superbly written novel has a well-developed and engaging storyline that is quite riveting. Grace Borrowes tugs on the heartstrings with another emotional story that perfectly blends a sweet yet sexy romance with a realistic plot. Old and new fans absolutely do not want to miss this brilliant conclusion to the Sweetest Kisses series.

Summary:

The sweetest kiss is the one that means a fresh start

In the second novel of the Sweetest Kisses series, classical pianist Vera Waltham is quiet, cautious, and fiercely protective of her young daughter, but she lets down her guard enough to strike up an unlikely friendship with business law expert James Knightley. James’s past comes between them when Vera learns exactly how big a tomcat he has been, but when she and her daughter are in danger, it’s to James she turns…

The Review:

The First Kiss is the newest installment in Grace Burrowes’ delightful Sweetest Kisses series starring the Knightley brothers. In this outing, youngest brother James falls for Vera Waltham, but will issues from their respective pasts prevent them from finding their happily ever after?

Vera is a very successful and extremely talented concert pianist and single mom. Currently on a much needed hiatus after her second marriage ended in a tempestuous divorce, she and her eight year old daughter Twyla are now living a somewhat isolated life in the Maryland countryside. When someone begins harassing her, Vera is frightened, angry and quite certain her ex is behind the threats she has been receiving. Despite her fear, she fiercely guards her newly discovered independence and she rebuffs James’ offers of assistance. But James proves to be very stubborn and the two strike up a unlikely friendship that takes an unexpectedly romantic turn.

James is charming, light-hearted and very flirtatious. He is also quite popular with the ladies, but he never gets serious with any of his flings. However his one night stands have lost their luster recently and he has become more focused on his career. James is instantly drawn to Vera but he also respects her need for space. Their meeting coincides with his growing dissatisfaction with his life and his attempt to discover the source of this frustration leads to surprising introspection on his part. An impulsive decision provides an unexpected connection with Vera that allows their friendship to deepen.

Their transition from friends to lovers is leisurely and this gives both James and Vera the opportunity to get to know one another. More importantly, this slow approach also allows them to reflect on their pasts and gives them the time to work through their respective issues. For the first time in her life, Vera is with a man who puts her before her career and James’ perceptive comments helps her figure out what direction she wants to take professionally. The unexpected romance with Vera gives James some much needed insight into his troubled relationship with his mother and the correlation this has to his superficial relationships with women.

The First Kiss is a well-written novel with a very charming well-developed cast of characters. Although the storyline is engaging and interesting, the overall pacing is a little slow until about the halfway point. The suspense aspect is quite intriguing and it is virtually impossible to guess the perpetrator’s identity. Once again Grace Burrowes brings readers another fabulous romance with plenty of depth, realistic issues and tremendous character growth. It is another highly satisfying love story that is sure to please readers and leave them eager for the next installment in the Sweetest Kisses series.

Summary:

A single kiss can change everything…

In the first novel of the Sweetest Kisses series, Hannah Stark has set her sights on corporate law to assure her a career of paperwork, predictability, and conservative suits. Contracts, finance, and the art of the deal sing to her, while the mess and misery of the courtroom do not. But her daughter needs to eat, so when Hannah is offered a temporary position in a small town firm’s domestic relations department, she reluctantly accepts.

Trent Knightley is mightily drawn to his newest associate, though Hannah is as protective of her privacy as she is competent. When their friendship and attraction heat up, Hannah’s secrets put her heart and Trent’s hopes in double jeopardy.

The Review:

A Single Kiss by Grace Burrowes is a phenomenal contemporary romance that is sweet, thought-provoking and poignant.   A wonderful opposites attract love story, this first book in the Sweetest Kisses series is a beautifully written novel that is emotional and quite compelling.

Hannah Stark is a single mom with a heartbreaking past who finds herself temporarily working as a family lawyer in Trent Knightley’s law firm. Working for Trent is about the only perk of her new job and he is not only her boss, he is a friend and mentor. The two are also attracted to one another and when their paths unexpectedly cross outside of the office, Hannah and Trent decide to explore their passion.

Hannah is very closemouthed about herself and her life outside of the office. She has many layers that take much of the novel to peel back but bits and pieces of her traumatic childhood are slowly revealed to readers as she fights for the best possible outcome for her clients. Despite the scars from her upbringing, Hannah is a loving and compassionate woman, but she is very apprehensive about revealing her secrets to anyone.

Trent is idealistic but pragmatic and he is very passionate about his chosen profession. He wholeheartedly believes in the legal system but it is not until he gets to know Hannah that he sees how imperfect it can be. He is loyal and confident and despite his dedication to his career, he is very devoted to his family. Trent is stunned by the depth of his feelings for Hannah, but he is also endearingly uncertain about acting on his attraction.

There are definitely sparks between Trent and Hannah, but they are both reluctant to indulge in an office fling. They easily settle into a comfortable working relationship and a friendship grows naturally out of their mutual respect for one another. Hannah is surprised by how easily she begins to trust Trent, but she still remains very guarded and self-protective. Their romance is sweet and sensual, but Hannah refuses to divulge her closely guarded secrets until she comes close to losing everything she holds dear.

A Single Kiss is an incredibly heartwarming romance with a charming cast of well-developed characters. The plot is unique and Grace Burrowes does not shy away from realistic, hard hitting topics. It is an absolutely captivating story that will leave readers impatiently awaiting the next installment in the Sweetest Kisses series.
