Summary:

A rainy-day ritual—a tea party between three little girls—becomes the framework of not only their friendship, but their lives.

Redheaded, curly-haired Zoe is openhearted, kind and free-spirited, and dreams of becoming a famous actor in New York City. Shy Emily struggles with mental health but has the heart and soul of a writer. And Shannon—tall, athletic, strong—has a deep sense of loyalty that will serve her well when she heads off to military college.

As Zoe, Emily and Shannon grow into women—forging careers, following dreams and finding love—they’ll learn that life doesn’t always unfold the way they want it to, but through it all, the one constant is each other, and their regular tea parties. And when the unthinkable happens, the girls must come together to face the greatest test of all.

A deeply moving novel about the family that raises us, the hearts that nurture us and the great friendships that define our lives.

Review:

The Little Teashop on Main by Jodi Thomas is a heartwarming novel which spans thirty years of a childhood friendship between three women.

Zoe O’Flaherty, Emily Waters, and Shannon Morell meet for the first time at a tea party when they are five years old. Despite their differences, they remain close friends throughout their lives. Raised by her single mom, Alex, Zoe is energetic and craves the spotlight. Emily is quiet, unassuming and unbeknownst to her friends and family, suffering from depression. Shannon lives with her Air Force dad Mack and she is off to the Air Force Academy after high school. Jack Hutchinson is friends with each of the women and he is also going to the Air Force Academy.  He is close with Emily and Zoe, but his relationship with Shannon is fraught with tension as he hopes she will one day see him as more than a friend.  Although their lives take them in different directions, their small hometown of Laurel Springs anchors them and brings them together throughout their lives.

After high school graduation, Zoe moves to New York to pursue her dream of becoming a Broadway star. She is self-confident, free-spirited and enthusiastic living in New York and acting in plays. She is not ready to settle down and she never stays with one man for long. But her loyalty to her friends is unshakable and Zoe will drop everything when she is needed.

Emily leaves for college after high school, but she quickly drops out and returns home. Suffering from headaches from a car accident, she is not eating or sleeping. The youngest child in the family, Emily’s overbearing mother is relentless as she tries to bend her daughter to her will.  After a short hospital stay, Emily’s friends rally around her and help her strike out on her own. But it is her close friendship with Fuller Wilder that lifts her up and sustains her.  But will a secret he is keeping destroy their budding romance?

Shannon is a planner and she has her life mapped out. She and Jack are both at the Air Force Academy and she is both attracted to and irritated by him. These mixed signals act as a potent shield and Jack soon grows frustrated with her. Is there any chance he and Shannon will find a way to bridge the gap that keeps them apart?

Unfolding from multiple perspectives, The Little Teashop on Main is a truly captivating novel about family, friendship and love. Each of the characters are vibrantly developed and extremely likable. Although mostly a light read, Jodi Thomas deftly touches on sensitive topics with ease. I highly recommend this warmly inviting and endearing novel to readers of the genre.

But Lauren’s husband wants his “perfect” life back and his actions are shocking. Facing an uncertain future, Lauren discovers an inner strength she didn’t know she had as she fights for the love and happiness she deserves.

Review:

The View from Alameda Island by Robyn Carr is an enjoyable novel of new beginnings, healing and love.

For the past twenty-four years, Lauren Delaney has put up with abuse from her surgeon husband Brad. He is verbally, emotionally and physically abusive and she has finally mustered the courage to take back her life.  Having carefully planned her escape, Lauren sets out to rebuild  her life but will her daughters, Lacey and Cassie, understand why she is divorcing their father? And what will Brad do to Lauren once he learns she is divorcing him?

Lauren has tried to leave Brad before but he always managed to browbeat her into returning. She has many regrets about her choices and looking back, she clearly sees all of the warning signs she ignored.   Now having left Brad, Lauren is rightfully concerned that staying with him might have sent the wrong message to her daughters.  She is surprised by Lacey and Cassie’s reactions to her news and she works hard to maintain her relationship with both young women. Having believed she is safely out Brad’s reach, Lauren is stunned by his reaction once she is out of his clutches.

Beau Magellan is also in the midst of a messy divorce from his soon to be ex, Pamela. Having dealt with her mercurial moods and manipulative behavior throughout their relationship, he has been separated from her for quite some time. Although she is hopeful for a reconciliation, Beau is done with his marriage.  But Pamela is not making it easy for their divorce to progress.

After a chance meeting, Beau and Lauren form a fast friendship in which they support each other through their divorces.  Neither of them are ready for a relationship so both are surprised when they realize their feelings for one another are deepening. But their path to happily ever after is littered with obstacles. Their soon to be exes are making their respective divorces difficult.  And both Beau and Lauren are concerned about how their adult children will react to a romance between them.

Despite a little predictability, The View from Alameda Island is a engrossing novel about starting over and finding love when it is least expected. Lauren is lovely woman who stayed in an abusive marriage for far too long. Beau is a laidback, easygoing man who has finally had enough of being taken advantage of by his soon to be ex-wife. The romance between Beau and Lauren grows organically from friendship and it is incredibly uplifting watching them fall in love. Robyn Carr deftly tackles difficult subject with a great deal of sensitivity. Despite the somewhat dark storyline, the novel is ultimately uplifting as Lauren, Beau and their families find well-deserved happiness. A must read for fans of the genre.

But his plans never took this sweet and surprising Amish widow into account. She just might be his second chance at happiness…and love.

Review:

The first installment in The Amish of Cedar Grove series, The Wish by Patricia Davids is a heartwarming novel of redemption, healing and love.

Widow Laura Beth Yoder loved her husband, but she is ready to remarry and hopefully have the family she has long dreamed of.  However, there is a serious lack of eligible men to marry in her small community in Kansas so she is making plans to move to Ohio. Laura Beth is hoping that expanding her pumpkin crop will provide her the funds she needs to make repairs to her farm so she can put it up for sale.  Her younger sister Sarah and her close friend Abigail Troyer are trying to convince her to stay in Kansas, but Laura Beth remains steadfast in her decision. Will the unexpected arrival of Englischer Joshua King and his four month old son, Caleb, lead her to rethink her plans?

Laura Beth is a resourceful woman with a strong faith. She desperately misses her husband, but she also dreams of having a family.  Laura Beth is certain she is making the right choice to move and she will do whatever she needs to do to make this happen. But when she rescues Joshua and Caleb during a storm, she is drawn to the clearly troubled man and she is captivated by his son.  Will learning about Joshua’s past change how she is beginning to feel about him?

Joshua is a man on a mission when he crosses paths with Laura Beth. He does not deviate from his plans but he does begin to wonder if he is making the right choice. Having never dealt with his dysfunctional childhood, Joshua continues to believe he is not deserving of love. He is also unable to forgive the person who so deeply wronged him. Will Laura Beth’s gentle encouragement change his mind about his plans for the future? Will Joshua go against a loved one’s wishes?

The Wish is an enthralling novel with a realistic plot and endearing characters. Laura Beth has a big heart but she is occasionally a bit misguided when it comes the people she cares about. Joshua’s back story is heart wrenching but watching him discover his worth is very uplifting. The romance between Joshua and Laura Beth is very understated and grows naturally out their friendship.  But with one huge obstacle standing in their way, is there any chance for a future together?

This first release in Patricia Davids’ The Amish of Cedar Grove series is an engaging story with an idyllic setting, appealing characters and an enjoyable storyline.  I absolutely loved and highly recommend this inspiring novel to fans of the genre.

Review:

The Cliff House by RaeAnne Thayne is an engaging novel of family, love and healing.

When he offers Anna and her daughters a place to stay in exchange for her help with renovations, she’s tempted. His gentle way with her girls makes her want to trust him, but she’s been wrong before…

He remains close with his brothers, Liam, who is a police officer in town and Cash, who returns frequently to visit his family.  Sean is dedicated to his foster mom, Ma Dixie, and he is trying to help his foster brother, Tony, who is struggling to escape his ex-wife Brandi. Low Country Hero  is a captivating romance with engaging characters and a realistic storyline. Summary:

The California sunshine’s not quite so bright for three sisters

who get dumped in the same week…

Finola, a popular LA morning-show host, is famously upbeat until she’s blindsided on live TV by the news that her husband is sleeping with a young pop sensation who has set their affair to music. While avoiding the tabloids and pretending she’s just fine, she’s crumbling inside, desperate for him to come to his senses and for life to go back to normal.

Zennie’s breakup is no big loss. Although the world insists she pair up, she’d rather be surfing. So agreeing to be the surrogate for her best friend is a no-brainer—after all, she has an available womb and no other attachments to worry about. Except…when everyone else, including her big sister, thinks she’s making a huge mistake, being pregnant is a lot lonelier—and more complicated—than she imagined.

Never the tallest, thinnest or prettiest sister, Ali is used to being overlooked, but when her fiancé sends his disapproving brother to call off the wedding, it’s a new low. And yet Daniel continues to turn up “for support,” making Ali wonder if maybe—for once—someone sees her in a way no one ever has.

But side by side by side, these sisters will start over and rebuild their lives with all the affection, charm and laugh-out-loud humor that is classic Susan Mallery.

Review:

Featuring three sisters whose lives implode on the same day, California Girls by Susan Mallery is a poignant novel of self discovery, new beginnings and healing.

Finola Corrado is happily married to Felix and looking forward to taking their marriage to the next level. The host of a popular morning show, she is stunned when her husband confesses he is having an affair. Depressed and brokenhearted, Finola is hurt by the accusation she is partly responsible for the state of her marriage.  She is not exactly the most empathetic woman and she is also a bit shallow.  As the weeks pass and her heartbreak plays out in the public eye, will Finola continue to hope Felix will come back to her?

Ali Schmitt is blissfully planning her upcoming wedding to her fiancé Glen. Surprised to find Glen’s brother Daniel on her doorstep, she is shocked when he tells her Glen is calling off the wedding. Taken aback by his offer to help as she cancels the wedding preparations, she is grateful for his steadfast support. Reflecting on her relationship with Glen, Ali comes to a few unexpected conclusions about herself and her engagement.  As she emerges from the painful break-up, she has newfound confidence that provides the boost she needs to go after what she wants.  Ali is also a bit shaken by the discovery that her feelings for Daniel go deeper than friendship. Will Ali have the courage to see if she and Daniel have a future together?

Zennie is self-confident and content with her life. She has a wonderful circle of friends whom she sees quite often. She is physically active and enjoys running, hiking, surfing and rock climbing. Zennie dates but she is not really looking for a permanent relationship.  When her latest romance fizzles, she decides to temporarily stop dating. The timing is fortuitous since her best friend  Bernie and her husband Hayes ask her to be their surrogate. Zennie does not hesitate to say yes but once she is pregnant, she realizes she might not have given enough thought to how drastically her life will change. Someone from her past offers unexpected assistance but what will happen to their friendship once Zennie gives birth?

California Girls is an introspective, funny and heartwarming novel featuring three sisters who are facing personal challenges. The women are vibrantly developed but some of the sisters are more likable than others. The storyline is quite captivating with each of the women discovering hidden strengths as they overcome their respective challenges.  The romantic element is subtle and enhances the sisters’ growth as they recover from their painful breakups. The story has plenty of heart and sparkling wit and Susan Mallery  brings this thought-provoking novel to an emotional and uplifting conclusion.
