Summary:

Can love conquer all?

Jimmy Rafferty and Eddie Molina go way back at the J-Bar ranch. They’ve worked together, bunked together, camped out, and drank together. So how has Jimmy failed to notice that Eddie is gay? Eddie has not failed to notice that his friend has a serious drinking problem, and he’s determined to help Jimmy kick the booze cold turkey.

Taking him up to a snowbound cabin to detox, Eddie is confronted with Jimmy’s fierce denial. But the pains of withdrawal are nothing for Jimmy compared with the heartache of denying his true feelings and his deep longing…for the one man who cares for him more than anyone else on earth.

The Review:

The second installment in Z.A. Maxfield’s The Cowboys series, My Heartache Cowboy is full of strong emotions that don’t just tug on the heartstrings. Nope, it’s a full-fledged yank that pulls the reader headlong into the story from the very first word. This deeply moving novel pretty much breaks your heart as Eddie Molina tries to help his longtime Jimmy Rafferty overcome his addiction to alcohol.

Jimmy and Eddie have been best friends and working partners for nearly 15 years. They have shared a lot of life’s ups and downs, but after Malloy and Crispin (from My Cowboy Heart) unexpectedly find love, they discover how little they know about one another. Eddie finally admits that he is gay and well, Jimmy, about the only thing that becomes obvious is he has a serious drinking problem. Facing an uncertain future, Eddie and Malloy know that it is time to take drastic steps to help Jimmy but Jimmy is in deep denial and he fights Eddie every step of the way. When Eddie finally admits Jimmy needs more help than he can provide, he turns to his close friend and sometime lover Don. Jimmy’s jealousy of Don quickly turns to desire and soon the three men are indulging in a very hot threesome while Don guides Jimmy through the intricacies of Alcoholics Anonymous. When Jimmy and Eddie return to the J-Bar, their newfound bond will be tested as Jimmy tries to maintain his sobriety and they try to figure out what is next for their fragile new relationship.

Jimmy and Eddie both personify the “strong, silent type”, but Jimmy is definitely the less open of the two. Since My Heartache Cowboy is written in first person from his perspective, readers experience firsthand Jimmy’s inability to express his fears, needs and desires. What he thinks and what he says are often two different things and while his inner monologue is humorous, it is also heartbreaking. Jimmy’s childhood was extremely dysfunctional and he is still dealing with guilt from long ago events. He stubbornly maintains he is not an alcoholic, but he wants to make Eddie happy, so he does work diligently at staying sober but doubts and uncertainty still plague Jimmy once they return to the J-Bar.

Eddie is rock solid, patient and steady as a rock during Jimmy’s recovery. He talks freely about his past with Don but once the three of them become involved, he is a little more reticent with Jimmy. This awkwardness becomes more apparent with their return to the ranch and their relationship is soon on shaky ground. Despite his openness about his past, Eddie still harbors a few secrets that will play a crucial role in the future of their relationship.

Eddie and Don are close friends and occasional lovers and their open affection for another catches Jimmy by surprise. Eddie, Don and Jimmy are soon burning up the sheets with some very sexy threesomes and while Jimmy and Don grow closer, an emotional distance begins to grow between Eddie and Jimmy. Their return to the J-Bar adds to Jimmy’s confusion when his and Eddie’s relationship reverts back to friendship.

My Heartache Cowboy is a poignant and emotional romance that will make you laugh and cry as Eddie and Jimmy finally recognize the truth about themselves and their relationship. It is a journey of self-discovery and recovery for Jimmy as he faces the demons of his past. It is an absolutely breathtaking story of love that Z.A. Maxfield’s fans are going to love.

Summary:

They can’t deny the attraction…or the danger…

Men of Honor, Book 5

Since losing their beloved third to cancer, Keith Masters and Johnny Lou Reed haven’t thought about filling the void in their lives with anyone else. Until a stormy Christmas Eve, when a half-frozen, newly discharged Army Ranger shows up on their doorstep—with no memory of who he is or how he got there.

The former Marine in Keith is suspicious that he can’t turn up any information about Shane anywhere, not even an address. Direct questioning will have to wait until they’ve gotten the boy well.

Shane knows it’s only a matter of time before Keith and Reed figure out his past. And when they learn the depth and the darkness of the secrets he holds, he could get them all killed.

In the heat of the dark winter nights, the three men discover a passion that heals the gaping wounds in their hearts. And Shane wonders, despite the danger hot on his heels, how he will ever bear to leave…

Product Warnings: Contains secrets, undercover operations and three hot, alpha military men who can set a cold winter night on fire.

The Review:

Bound for Keeps, the fifth installment in SE Jakes’ Men of Honor series, is a compelling romance between three men who are emotionally scarred by past events but still believe in the healing power of love.

Keith Masters and Johnny Lou Reed have been in a long term committed relationship for several years. They are still mourning the loss of their third partner, Bobby, when Shane mysteriously appears on their doorstep in the middle of a raging snow storm. As former military men now working as mercenaries, Keith and Reed are quickly aware their unexpected visitor is somehow connected with the military as well and it soon becomes clear that Shane is revealing a carefully edited version of his past. When Shane’s mysterious past finally catches up with him, will it destroy their fledgling relationship?

Ms. Jakes does a superlative job of getting the reader up to speed on the intricacies of everyone’s pasts and their previous and present relationships. Through flashbacks and conversations, we learn of how Keith and Bobby began their relationship and how Reed became the third in their triad. Shane’s story is revealed in bits and pieces and although Keith and Bobby uncover some of his secrets, they patiently wait for Shane to disclose this information on his own.

Bound for Keeps plays out over several months and the men’s shared experiences in both their professional and personal lives bring them together. Both Keith and Reed are honest with one another about their attraction to Shane and they both see the possibility of adding him to their relationship. The men take the time to get to know one another both individually and as a threesome both in bed and out. Their relationship never feels forced or hurried and it always feels realistic. There are a few instances of jealousy and there are few rough patches as Shane continues to keep secrets from Keith and Reed.

While the story is mainly character driven, there are a few action scenes. Reed and Keith go out on a few missions, and the story culminates with Shane’s confrontation with a man from his past. The action sequences are brief and wrapped up fairly quickly, but they provide added dimension to the characters and the plot.

The sex scenes are fairly well detailed and there is a light BDSM element to some of them. They are a good mix of ménage scenes as well as the men together in different pairings. There is a little bit of dominant and submissive exploration between the three men and the men are a perfect compliment for one another.

The Men of Honor series is an excellent series and while I have enjoyed all of the previous installments, Bound for Keeps is my personal favorite. The story is fast-paced and quite riveting. The protagonists are exceptionally well-developed and their flaws add to their charm.

Although Bound for Keeps can be read as a standalone story, you won’t want to miss a single installment in this outstanding series from SE Jakes. Definitely a recommended read for anyone who enjoys romances with hot military men turned mercenaries.

Summary:

Liam McGuire has the perfect life–his job is a nightmare, his apartment was swank back in the eighties, and he has a secret so painful it could destroy him. What can top that? Meeting his son’s new boyfriend, that’s what.

For former porn star Liam McGuire, life is pretty tame, except that his twenty-one year old son is now dating the love of Liam’s life. At the ripe old age of thirty-eight, Liam’s entire world is collapsing around him, his past catching up with him, his secrets and his lies are coming back to bite him. All because Kel had to go and fall in love with Seth.

CONTENT ADVISORY: This title contains incestuous subject matter.

The Review:

Mercy Celeste’s Beyond Complicated is an extremely hot and highly emotional story that ventures into taboo territory. Complicated does not even begin to cover the intricate relationship between Liam McGuire, his son Kel and his ex-lover Seth Vincent.

Liam’s part of the story is particularly heartbreaking. One mistake as a teenager turns his life upside down and leads him to make unthinkable decisions. A horrible act of violence destroys his relationship with Seth and sets Liam on downward spiral that nearly destroys him. Emerging from his dark days, Liam is leading a rather boring life when Seth re-enters his life as Kel’s latest boyfriend.

Kel is mature for his age and wise beyond his years. His childhood was dysfunctional and his relationship with his parents is now distant. Kel’s relationship with Liam is more like a close friendship than father/son, and they too have drifted apart.

Seth is the cause of Liam’s downfall but in the end, he also proves to be Liam’s salvation. He somehow manages to make the unforgivable forgivable and rights the wrongs of Liam’s incredibly painful past.

Beyond Complicated is a sometimes uncomfortable but always compelling read. Sexual boundaries are blurred and crossed resulting in exquisitely erotic sex scenes. The sex between Liam and Seth is often raw, gritty and overflowing with dark emotions.

Beyond Complicated by Mercy Celeste is an intense novel that is quite complex. It is full of secrets and convoluted twists and turns. The plot is without a doubt controversial and not for the sexually faint of heart. The book is not for everyone, but it is an incredible journey of love and healing that I am glad I took.

The Review:

With historical, supernatural ménage, western, and witty contemporary novellas to choose from, the Men Under the Mistletoe anthology offers a diverse collection of male/male holiday themed romances from four gifted authors. Reuniting lovers is the underlying theme of these heartwarming and very sexy stories.

Ava March’s My True Love Gave to Me is a gut wrenching second chance at love historical romance. Afraid of his feelings and what society and his family will think of their unconventional relationship, Thomas Bennett abandons Alexander Norton for four years.

My True Love Gave to Me is filled with anguish, love and lust as Thomas proves he is willing to do whatever it takes to win Alexander’s forgiveness. A wonderful story that takes the protagonists (and readers) through a wide range of emotions and some very steamy sex scenes!

White Knights takes a supernatural twist that proves very illuminating for Gavin Lowden following his breakup with longtime boyfriend Piers. Harper Fox’s richly detailed storytelling engages the reader in this dramatic and mystical novella. Gavin is a flawed yet sympathetic protagonist whose unexpected encounter with two rescue workers provides him new insight into his relationship with Piers. Exceptional character development, a unique storyline and a remarkable epilogue make White Knights a standout read.

Josh Lanyon’s Lone Star is a beautifully written story with a delightful down home feel. When Mitch Evans returns to Texas after a twelve year absence, he discovers that, sometimes, you really can go home again. Especially when you have a sexy Texas Ranger like Web Eisley waiting for you.

Mitch’s visit to his home town is a bittersweet reflection of his life past and present. It is a time of regret for words left unspoken. It is a lesson in learning from his past mistakes. Most importantly Lone Star is a sweet yet moving romance that will melt your heart as Mitch and Web find their way back to one another.

K.A. Mitchell’s The Christmas Proposition reunites Mel Halner and Bryce Campion for their mutual friends’ wedding at Mel’s Christmas tree farm. The passion between the ex-lovers burns hotter than ever but will they find a way to stay together after the wedding?

The Christmas Proposition is a humorous and sexy novella with a superb cast of characters. Mel and Bryce are well-drawn likeable protagonists. Their smokin’ hot chemistry leads to some very erotic and incendiary sex scenes. The dynamics between Mel and his family are realistic and provide additional depth to the story. The Christmas tree farm is the perfect backdrop for this charming second chance at love romance.

Men Under the Mistletoe is a marvelous anthology that is guaranteed to heat up your holiday season. Although the stories are available individually, I highly recommend the entire anthology.
