eBook Contest 6/7

Here are the eBooks for this week’s Winning Wednesday contest:

Title: A Little Ray of Sunshine by Kristan Higgins
Publisher: Berkley
Genre: Contemporary, Family Life
Length: 511 pages

Summary:

A kid walks into your bookstore and… Guess what? He’s your son. The one you put up for adoption eighteen years ago. The one you never told anyone about. Surprise!

And a huge surprise it is.

It’s a huge surprise to his adoptive mother, Monica, who thought she had a close relationship with Matthew, her nearly adult son. But apparently, he felt the need to secretly arrange a vacation to Cape Cod for the summer so he could meet his birth mother…without a word to either her or his dad.

It’s also a surprise— to say the least—to Harlow, the woman who secretly placed her baby for adoption so many years ago. She’s spent the years since then building a quiet life. She runs a bookstore with her grandfather, hangs out with her four younger siblings and is more or less happily single, though she can’t help gravitating toward Grady Byrne, her old friend from high school. He’s moved back to town, three-year-old daughter in tow, no wife in the picture. But she’s always figured her life had to be child-free, so that complicates things.

When Matthew walks into Harlow’s store, she faints. Monica panics. And all their assumptions—about what being a parent really means—explode. This summer will be full of more surprises as both their families are redefined…and as both women learn that for them, there’s no limit to a mother’s love.

Title: Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monahan
Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons
Genre: Contemporary, Romance, Women’s Fiction
Length: 319 pages

Summary:

Beach Rules:
Do take long walks on the sand.
Do put an umbrella in every cocktail.
Do NOT run into your first love.

Sam’s life is on track. She has the perfect doctor fiancé, Jack (his strict routines are a good thing, really), a great job in Manhattan (unless they fire her), and is about to tour a wedding venue near her family’s Long Island beach house. Everything should go to plan, yet the minute she arrives, Sam senses something is off. Wyatt is here. Her Wyatt. But there’s no reason for a thirty-year-old engaged woman to feel panicked around the guy who broke her heart when she was seventeen. Right?

Yet being back at this beach, hearing notes from Wyatt’s guitar float across the night air from next door as if no time has passed—Sam’s memories come flooding back: the feel of Wyatt’s skin on hers, their nights in the treehouse, and the truth behind their split. Sam remembers who she used to be, and as Wyatt reenters her life their connection is as undeniable as it always was. She will have to make a choice.

Title: All the Right Notes by Dominic Lim
Publisher: Forever
Genre: Contemporary, Gay, Romance, Comedy
Length: 385 pages

Summary:

In this hilarious and joyous rom com, sparks fly when a piano genius and a Hollywood heartthrob are thrown together for a charity performance of solos, heartfelt duets, and a big, showstopping finale.

Quito Cruz might be a genius piano player and composer in New York City now but it doesn’t mean that he’s any closer to his Broadway dream. Although Quito knows what the problem is. Or rather who. Because ever since that night in college—with pretty-boy jock Emmett Aoki—his inspiration has been completely MIA . . .

Now Quito’s dad wants him to put on a charity performance in his hometown. And there’s one hella big string attached: convince Emmett—now one of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities—to perform.

It’s all shaping up to be the biggest musical fiasco of Quito’s life. Especially when Emmett agrees to attend, and Quito realizes that undeniable vibe between them is stronger than ever. Because there’s nothing simple about falling for a movie star . . . even when he’s pitch-perfect.

Mystery Monday: Double Indemnity by Robert Whitlow

If you love a good mystery then you should check out this week’s spotlight!

Title: Double Indemnity by Robert Whitlow
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Genre: Contemporary, Christian, Mystery, Suspense
Length: 431 pages

Summary:

Someone stands to gain millions of dollars from a hunter’s accidental death . . . unless that death wasn’t an accident.

Matt and Elena Thompson present the picture of perfection. But their enviable life isn’t all it seems. Their marriage is on the rocks, and financial disaster looms. Then Matt is killed in a hunting accident, and the questions and accusations begin to mount.

Attorney Liz Acosta, newly arrived in the mountains of north Georgia after graduating from law school, plans to get some job experience on her resume before returning home to seek a position with a big-time firm. Intellectual pastor Connor Grantham isn’t sure that shepherding a rural congregation is what he ultimately wants to do with his life. Drawn to philosophy, theology, and nature, he’s beginning to feel more at home in north Georgia—especially after he meets the brilliant and energetic Liz.

While Liz and Connor spend more time with each other and discover just how compatible two people from wildly different backgrounds can be, they’re also being drawn into the shadowy world of Matt and Elena Thompson. As the couple’s marriage counselor, Connor finds himself in the middle of their explosive arguments. As Elena’s attorney, Liz is caught in the tailspin created by Matt’s death.

Together, Connor and Liz attempt to solve the mystery of what really happened to Matt. If his death is ruled an accident, then the double indemnity clause in his life insurance would go into effect, essentially doubling the payout. But as Liz sorts through the legal paperwork of who stands to gain an immense sum of money from Matt’s death, Connor is accused of the unthinkable with much more at stake than millions of dollars.

* Contemporary Christian legal drama
* Perfect for fans of John Grisham
* Includes discussion questions for book clubs

Book Talk: What have you been reading lately?

Welcome to this week’s Book Talk!

I had another excellent reading week!

Fire with Fire by Candace Fox: 4.5 stars. An action-packed, fast-paced thriller. The “good guys” are flawed but that only adds to their likeability. The lab kidnappers’ actions are understandable yet incredibly misguided. Detective Charlie Hoskins is very relucatant to pair up with Lynette Lamb but she refuses to take no for an answer. She is a very intuitive investigator whose assistance is invaluable throughout their investigation. Readers will be on the edge of their seats as this incredible mystery races to a breathtaking conclusion.

The Lie Maker by Linwood Barclay: 4.5 stars. A fast-paced, twist-filled mystery that weaves back and forth in time. In the present Jack Givens is drawn into a search for his father who is missing from the witness protection program. In the past, readers discover what his father meant when he told his son “Your dad’s not a good person. Your dad killed people, son.” The characters are three-dimensional and interesting yet flawed. The storyline is a little improbable but it is very easy to suspend disbelief. The plot moves at a brisk pace and the conclusion is action paced.

Drowning by T.J. Newman: 5 stars. An adrenaline-laced thriller. The attention grabbing storyline keeps the pages turning at a blistering pace. The people aboard the plane are quite captivating and mostly likeable. The history between main characters Will Kent, soon to be ex-wife Chris and their eleven year old daughter is fraught and quite emotional. The chapters alternate between the high stakes rescue of the remaining passengers and the heart-rending events that contributed to the Kent’s separation and upcoming divorce. Different perspectives add plenty of depth to unfolding drama. The conclusion races to heart-stopping conclusion as the rescue plays out in just a matter of compelling hours.

Between Two Strangers by Kate White: 4.5 stars. A slow burn yet compelling mystery. A twisty storyline and engaging characters are the perfect combination for a page-turning read. Main character Skyler Moore struggles to understand why a one-night stand from twelve years ago would leave her a fortune. In her quest to uncover the truth, she has a skin-crawling stalker and an angry widow to contend with. It is not until the chilling conclusion that Skylar uncovers the stunning truth.

The Vanishing Hour by Seraphina Nova Glass: 4 stars. Written from muliple perspectives, this mystery is intriguing. Two of the mainish characters, Kira and Aden, have missing family members. Kira is frantic to find her daughter and her anxiety and stress levels are extremely high. Although sympathetic, Kira’s impulsive actions and inner monologue are very annoying. Aden’s father is missing but he is reluctant to return to Maine and deal with his brother and mom. But he is a dutiful son so he makes the journey and searches for his dad. Grace’s life is limited to the inn where she works. She has good reason for keeping to herself but finds herself a little less frightened once Aden becomes a guest. But when she learns about the missing people, Grace might just be the key to uncovering the startling truth about what has been happening in town. The plot is solid but the pacing is initally slow. The finale is full of urgency as Kira and Aden race to find their loved ones.

Hadley Wayne is known all over America as The Cowgirl Gourmet. A beloved star on The Cooking Network, the success of her show has turned her sleepy Montana ranching community into a Hollywood backlot and everyone knows all about her perfect life with her perfect rancher husband—but it’s not real.

Zack Wayne has never felt further apart from his wife, even while they play up an ideal marriage for the cameras. They’re living separate lives in separate bedrooms. The love he has for Hadley is still there, underneath mountains of resentment, but he doesn’t know if their marriage can last for much longer. He can’t keep up with the façade anymore, for the cameras or Hadley.

When their work forces them to take a break from the constant schedule of the set, they begin to rediscover who they are and why they fell in love all those years ago. If they can mend the hurts that brought them here, will they still want to say goodbye to their life together? Or will the cowboy discover he can only say yes to their future?

Rusterlers Creek Book Two
Publisher: Avon
Genre: Contemporary, Romance

Addison Fox welcomes you back to Rustlers Creek, where a handsome ranch vet’s long-ago love has finally returned, but soon he won’t remember all the years apart… or why he’s never been able to forget her.

Harper Allen has returned to Rustlers Creek but she’s not the heartbroken girl who left. After a successful career in Seattle, she’s back in her hometown to launch her coffee business with the help of her celebrity sister, the Cowgirl Gourmet. But Harper can’t escape handsome veterinarian Gray McClain, the man who broke her heart ten years ago and whose kisses still make her head spin.

Although Gray believed he knew what he was doing when he ended things with Harper, seeing her has made him question everything. He wanted more for her than a life with the son of a town drunk, but every moment with her is heaven. When a freak ranch accident causes Gray to lose some of his memory, he believes he’s spent the last decade with Harper, the woman he’s never stopped loving, instead of alone.

As Harper helps Gray return to health, she can’t deny she’s more in love with him than ever. But can she fight for the man of her dreams, even when he’s determined to let her go again? When it comes to choosing to forget or choosing to remember, Harper must show Gray she’ll always remember her cowboy.

Title: Always Her Cowboy by Addison Fox
Rustler’s Creek Book Three
Publisher: Avon
Genre: Contemporary, Romance
Length: 378 pages

Summary:

Back in Rustlers Creek, one cowboy discovers that a lifelong feud could become his forever romance…

Charlotte Wayne has detested Chance Beaumont since the fourth grade. Her bickering with the big, rugged cowboy has become legendary around their small Montana town. But little does anyone know, Charlotte’s animosity masks unspoken feelings… because underneath it all, Chance is the only man who ever truly claimed her heart.

Chance has spent his whole life in Rustlers Creek, but he’s always been on the outside looking in. He needs to focus on keeping his ranch afloat amid the massive debt left by his late father, and the feelings he harbors for Charlotte don’t make it any easier. She’s ranching royalty and he’s perpetually scrubbing mud off his boots. It’s safer to push her away than hope for something he can never have.

When a business opportunity forces Charlotte and Chance to work together, they share a heated moment in each other’s arms. The simmering attraction they’ve fought for years can no longer be ignored, but will Chance’s doubts stand in the way of their happiness?
