Summary:

He took her life, but left her alive.

Three years ago, reporter Kate Johnson was the first victim-and only survivor-of the Broadcast Butcher. Scarred both physically and psychologically by the brutal serial killer, Kate lives life on the run, knowing that one day, he will find her and finish what he started.

In the pursuit of justice, you sometimes have to step outside the law.

Agent Hayden Reed spends his life chasing monsters. The only way to stay sane is to detach, but the second the Broadcast Butcher case crosses his desk, Hayden knows this is the case that might just cost him his soul. To catch this vicious murderer before he strikes again, Hayden must find Kate and earn her trust. For it’s her darkest secrets that hold the key to stopping this madman once and for all . . .

The Review:

The first installment of Shelley Coriell’s The Apostles series, The Broken is an intricately plotted and suspenseful mystery. Full of intriguing twists and turns, this compelling novel moves at a furious pace from beginning to end.

Broadcast journalist Katrina Erickson barely escaped with her life after a brutal attack by a knife-wielding attacker. Three years later and now living under the alias Kate Johnson, she is a live-in companion to a feisty disabled vet when she learns that her attacker has begun killing again. Knowing Katrina is the key to unmasking the Broadcast Butcher, FBI Agent Hayden Reed single-mindedly tracks her down and they, along with the other members of the elite FBI team known as The Apostles, work round the clock to catch the Butcher before he strikes again.

Kate escaped her dysfunctional and abusive childhood and through hard work and dedication, she forged a successful career as a broadcast journalist. In the aftermath of the vicious assault, she lost faith in the justice system and she now leads a lonely and fearful life. Kate is not weak or timid and despite her trepidation at emerging from hiding, she is quite determined to aid Hayden in his investigation. As the story progresses, Kate slowly regains her confidence and never lets her worries stand in the way of following where the evidence leads.

Hayden is absolutely brilliant and super dedicated to his career. Despite the atrocities he investigates, he remains hopeful he will catch the criminals he is seeking. Hayden has an uncanny ability to get into the minds of the suspects and he relentlessly pursues any and all leads. Coming off his own personal tragedy, Hayden immerses himself in the search for the Butcher and despite his concerns for Kate’s safety, he concedes she has valuable insight into the investigation.

Kate has surprising information about the killer’s possible identity and their investigation is off to a exciting start. The evidence takes them in several, sometimes unforeseen, directions. Ever conscious of the risks, Kate and Hayden follow the clues but dead ends and shocking discoveries leave them frustrated by their lack of progress.

Their close quarters forge an unexpected intimacy between Kate and Hayden and they are surprised by their growing attraction for one another. Although their focus remains primarily on the search for the Butcher, Kate and Hayden begin to reveal bits and pieces of their pasts and gradually, their relationship takes a personal turn. They do eventually act on their passion, but their love scenes fade to black.

The Broken is an extremely well-written and tightly plotted mystery. The murders take place off screen but there is no denying the brutality of the crimes. A series of red herrings and misdirects seamlessly and carefully conceals the killer’s identity and motives for the killings until the novel’s dramatic conclusion.

Shelley Coriell’s The Apostles is off to a strong beginning and I cannot wait to read the next novel in the series, The Buried!

Summary:

A Match Made in Texas is the sixth book in Katie Lane’s bestselling, witty and sexy Deep in the Heart of Texas series.

Living with four over-protective brothers is enough to make a good girl go bad. But the day Brianne Cates hits the road for a taste of freedom, she gets more trouble than she bargained for when she’s arrested by a sexy sheriff in mirrored shades. Now doing a stint of community service, she’s not going to let a cowboy cop like Dusty Hicks mess with her newfound independence-even if he awakens every wicked fantasy she’s ever had.

In Bramble, Texas, Dusty is the law. That means no leniency for the gorgeous rebel whose highway antics almost got them both killed. The divorced lawman doesn’t need another rich, pampered princess, even if Brianne has the lushest body and sweetest smile in the whole darn state. But even as Brianne proves that she lives to walk on the wild side, Dusty begins to wonder if maybe he has what it takes to tame her….

The Review:

A Match Made in Texas is another humorous installment in Katie Lane’s zany and romantic Deep in the Heart of Texas series. In this latest outing, Brianne Cates’ brothers exile her to Bramble to keep a brewing scandal at bay. But little do they realize their sweet, demure sister is, in actuality, a thrill-seeking adrenaline junkie who thrives on adventure. So when an irritating driver gets on Brianne’s last nerve, she winds up in an exciting high speed(ish) chase with local sheriff Dusty Hicks. One impetuous and ill thought out decision later and Brianne is unceremoniously hauled off to jail by the irate sheriff. But things really heat up between this ill-matched but passionate couple when Brianne’s community service puts them in very close proximity.

Family expectations clash with Brianne’s adventurous nature and she has been living a secret life in order to keep the peace. When her slimy ex posts pictures of her on the web, Brianne’s brothers are in damage control mode and she goes along with their plan in an effort to keep the rest of her activities under wraps. Brianne is also hoping getting out from under her family’s watchful eyes will give her the space she needs to figure out what she wants to do with her life. What she wants is not necessarily what is expected of her and her time in Bramble provides her with the opportunity to stretch her wings. Will Brianne follow her heart or will she continue to be let her family’s opinions guide her decisions?

Dusty’s marriage to a wealthy socialite ended in a nasty divorce and bitter custody battle, so he has zero patience for Brianne’s antics. But Brianne is full of unexpected surprises and he soon realizes that he has misjudged her. Dusty is taken off guard by his attraction to her and after they impulsively give in to their passion, they are inseparable. But once Dusty realizes that Brianne has been keeping something from him, will he give up on their budding romance?

Dusty and Brianne are passionate, vibrant characters with strong personalities and they both bring some emotional baggage into their relationship. Brianne has a little growing up to do and she also becomes conscious of the fact that some of Dusty’s preconceived ideas about her have some truth to them. Dusty might be divorced but he still has to contend with his ex as he fights for more time with his young daughter. Dusty and Brianne’s relationship is tenuous and it is surprisingly easy for them both to walk away at the first sign of trouble.

As with the other books in the Deep in the Heart of Texas series, Miss Hattie’s Henhouse and its eclectic residents play small, but crucial roles in the unfolding story. While most of Dusty and Brianne’s relationship takes place in Bramble, Minnie’s matchmaking helps bring them together initially. There are also a few brief guest appearances by brothers Brant, Beau and Billy, but the glimpses of youngest brother Beckett are the most intriguing.

A Match Made in Texas is a wildly sexy romance with a beautiful love story but it is also a tremendous journey of self-discovery for both Dusty and Brianne. The love scenes between Dusty and Brianne are deliciously naughty, their dialogue is delightfully witty and there are also a few poignant moments between them as well. The cast of characters is a bit quirky but lovable. The storyline is fast-paced and appealing with a secondary story arc that stirs up a bit of trouble for the residents of Bramble. A fun-filled and heartwarming stop in Katie Lane’s Deep in the Heart of Texas series that old and new fans definitely do not want to miss.

Summary:

BAD BOYS ARE HER WEAKNESS
Ice Erickksen has “one-night stand” written all over him. Once he’s finished shooting the Big Sky Pie reality show, this hot-as-hell TV producer is going to hightail it out of Montana and return to his glamorous life in L.A. But Ice gets into hot water when one of the goodies in the pie shop-a delightful blonde with marriage on her mind-burns up the camera lens.

Andrea Lovette, the manager of the shop, always picks the bad boys. But after her divorce, she’s determined to find the good family man that her two young sons deserve. Although Andrea’s body sizzles whenever Ice is near, she knows in her heart that he’s not marriage material. Then why does the bad boy still seem like such a good idea?

(55,000 words)

The Review:

Delightful is another fabulous romance in Adrianne Lee’s heartwarming Big Sky Pie series. In this latest installment, manager Andrea Lovette is paired up with Hollywood bad boy Ice Erickksen and the single mom finds it virtually impossible to resist the deliciously sexy charmer.

Andrea’s bad boy radar is pinging off the charts when Ice struts into Big Sky Pie but she has sworn off bad boys after her disastrous marriage to bull rider Donnie Lovette. About the only good thing that came out of her marriage are her two young sons and she is looking for a man who could be a good influence on her boys. Ice has trouble written all over him but their blistering hot attraction is impossible to ignore. Andrea knows that giving in to their desire is a mistake, but once they do, she is determined to keep her distance from Ice.

First impressions of Ice? Arrogant, womanizing, disrespectful jerk. Harsh, I know, but I absolutely hated how he thought about Andrea at first, and I thought she deserved soooo much better than Ice. But after their scrumptiously delicious one night stand? Ice begins to thaw into a wonderfully warm and caring man with an amazing array of strong emotions. But (isn’t there always a “but”?) he has some serious issues from his childhood to work through before he can even think about a future with Andrea.

The reality show is mainly used to bring Ice and Andrea together, but it also beautifully showcases the supporting cast of characters. Pie shop owner Molly McCoy really shines in this outing and she is just such a lovely person I am glad we got to see more of her. I was absolutely delighted that Wade Reynolds had a more prominent role in the story and I am still holding out hope he might find love in future novel (Callee’s friend Roxy springs to mind as his future love interest). We also get the opportunity catch up with the couples from the first two novels in the series and it is great to see they are still deliriously happy.

A charming addition to the Big Sky Pie series, Delightful is a fun and sexy romance. Adrianne Lee keeps the series fresh with unique storylines and unpredictable pairings. The characters are well-developed and appealing with realistic flaws and imperfections. My fingers are crossed that we will get another chance to visit the Big Sky Pie shop in the future.

Delightful can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend the entire series (read my reviews HERE).

Summary:

A Love as Wild as the West . . .

Aubrey Madison is starting over. Leaving Los Angeles and everything behind except the scars of her ruined past, Bree sets out for cowboy country. Now she has a new home, a new job-and a new worry: the ruggedly sexy rancher who makes her long for things she shouldn’t . . .

Rough and tumble cattleman Max Jameson has broken wild stallions and faced angry bulls. Yet the redheaded city cupcake who turned up at the High Heather Ranch might be his undoing. Bree has a plan to rescue the ranch from foreclosure that’s just crazy enough to work. But will Max gamble his future on a beautiful stranger?

The Review:

Nothing Sweeter is another well-written and entertaining romance by the wonderfully fabulous Laura Drake. This second installment in her charming Sweet on a Cowboy series is a compelling novel about new beginnings, self-acceptance and of course, love. It is not quite as emotional as The Sweet Spot, but it just as heartwarming and the cast of characters is just as endearing.

Aubrey “Bree” Madison is searching for a new life when her journey takes her to High Heather Ranch. The serene surroundings and low stress job provide Bree the perfect place to de-stress and just enjoy life. Her attraction to sexy cowboy and ranch owner Max Jameson catches her by surprise but she is able to keep her distance from her gruff, grumpy boss. That is until she comes up with the perfect plan to help Max and his brother Wyatt hold on to their beloved family inheritance.

Bree easily settles into her new routine as a stable hand but putting her past behind her proves to be much trickier. Plagued by nightmares, she throws herself wholeheartedly into her new job and begins to find a measure of peace. At first uneasy around the other ranch hands, she is quickly accepted by her peers. But it is Bree’s close friendship with Wyatt and Max’s cook and surrogate mother Tia Nita that she finds most soothing. She shares an easygoing rapport with Wyatt but Bree butts heads with Max right from their very first meeting. Part of their discord arises from their simmering sexual tension while Max’s stubborn cowboy pride is responsible for the rest.

Max is still reeling from his father’s unexpected death and the abrupt end to his previous romance when he first makes Bree’s acquaintance. His life is in turmoil as he fights to keep the ranch solvent while trying to smooth over his relationship with Wyatt. Max is a quintessential cowboy with long held beliefs that keep him from accepting Bree’s help. Although he and Wyatt have a decent relationship, some of Max’s convictions make it difficult for them to grow closer. Will this irascible man conquer habits of a lifetime and hold on to what is dear to his heart?

There is great chemistry between Max and Bree but the past has a pretty good hold on both of them. Max’s hurt from his failed romance colors his perception of Bree and he fights his attraction to her. His instincts tell him that she is keeping something from him and of course that assessment is spot on. Bree holds on to her secrets long after she should have revealed them and it is a waiting game to see how the truth will eventually come out. This part of the storyline is brilliantly executed and Max’s observations about Bree’s reasons for keeping them hidden are surprisingly astute.

The relationship between Max and Wyatt adds another layer to the overall plot. While they have not exactly been estranged, there is a cordial distance between them. Max’s discomfort about certain aspects of Wyatt’s life continues to come between them but Wyatt insists that Max deal with his conflicted feelings so they can fully repair the rift between them.

Nothing Sweeter is a well-plotted story with true to life characters who are flawed yet easy to like. Their problems are realistic and each of them rises to the challenges facing them. The romance between Max and Bree is slow growing but deliciously sexy. Laura Drake keeps the plot marvelously unpredictable and of course I LOVE how she incorporates the sport of bull riding into the storyline. Once again I am highly anticipating the next book in the series, Sweet on You, which will be available later this year.

While this fantastic addition to the Sweet on a Cowboy series can be read as a standalone story, you won’t want to miss the other novels in this terrific series.

Summary:

Workaholic Nick Taziano is the proud owner of a successful marketing company in Montana. But his career takes a backseat when he learns his dad plans to remarry his ex. Nick fears she’ll break his heart . . . again. And he doesn’t like being reunited with her obnoxious daughter-until the all-grown-up beauty kisses him at the engagement party. The kiss might be a mistake, but once he tastes Jane’s lips, nothing-not even her famous blueberry pie-compares.

A promising chef at Big Sky Pie, Jane Wilson never, ever wanted to see Nick Taziano again, but he’s just been hired to do the pie shop’s marketing. How’s a girl supposed to bake the best pastries in town when he’s a constant reminder of their steamy chemistry? His chocolate eyes and sexy dimples heat up the kitchen-and every part of her body. Jane has no room for a man in her life, yet sometimes the most delicious dishes don’t follow the recipe . . .

(55,000 words)

The Review:

Delicious by Adrianne Lee is a fast-paced and engaging romance. This second installment in the Big Sky Pie series finds former step-siblings Nick Taziano and Jane Wilson dismayed over the news of the upcoming remarriage of their respective parents. Equally troubling is their unexpected attraction to one another. As if their relationship isn’t already complicated enough, they are also thrown together professionally when Nick is hired to publicize the pie shop where Jane is the pastry chef.

I really liked Jane in Delectable (the first book in the series) so I was surprised by how much she initially irritated me in Delicious. She comes across as incredibly judgmental of both her mom and Nick. Instead of facing her problems head on, she runs away and avoids both her mom and Nick. As if Jane does not have enough to deal with, she is also plagued by self-esteem issues and an ambitious co-worker.

By about the middle of the novel, my feelings for Jane slowly began to change. I always liked her relationship with her dad and once she becomes less defensive and actually talks with her mom, Jane is much more receptive to her remarriage to Nick’s dad. While she lacks confidence in her personal life, professionally, Jane is very self-assured and the scenes in the pie shop are wonderful. Once Jane’s animosity toward Nick diminishes, their relationship begins to evolve.

Nick is so charming and personable that I pretty much fell for him right away. He is easygoing, confident and comfortable in his skin and these qualities make him an easy character to like. Although he, too, has a few qualms about his dad’s remarriage, he is more open minded about the upcoming nuptials. But it is Nick’s attitude toward Jane that really endeared him to me. He fully embraces everything about her and he doesn’t make any effort to hide how much he admires and desires Jane. Nick is always honest about what he is looking for in a relationship and I like how both he and Jane handle this part of the storyline.

Nick and Jane’s romance simmers on the backburner for much of the story. Sexual tension underscores most of their interactions and Jane fiercely resists her attraction to Nick. Their sex scenes are tastefully written and mostly take place off screen. The conflict between them is realistic and beautifully plays out with a surprise ending that I absolutely loved.

Many of the characters from Delectable make guest appearances in Delicious and I enjoyed getting to knowing them a little better. Nick, Quint and Wade are a great support network for Nick and I confess I am very eager for Wade’s story. Jane becomes closer to her boss Andrea and I’m thrilled that Andrea will find love in the next Big Sky Pie novel. Co-worker Bibi is one of those characters you love to hate, but I wound up falling just a little bit sorry for her in the end.

Delicious is a wonderful addition to Adrianne Lee’s heartwarming Big Sky Pie series. It can be read as a standalone novel, but you don’t want to miss a single installment of this lovely series.

It’s a lesson he learns all too well when he goes incommunicado for a four-week fishing trip to Alaska. As Callee and Quint rediscover their recipe for love, they realize that some couples are so sinfully good together that one delectable taste is never enough . . .

(59,000 words)

The Review:

Delectable by Adrianne Lee is a positively charming romance that is incredibly heartwarming. This first installment in the Big Sky Pie series is a fast-paced and engaging novel that is sure to delight anyone who enjoys homespun love stories.

While his four week fishing trip to Alaska helps Quint McCoy deal with his grief over his father’s sudden death, he still has to face the mess the he left behind. Determined to resurrect his neglected real estate business, he is shocked to discover his mom Molly has turned his office into a pie shop, Big Sky Pie. But Quint’s biggest regret is the damage his behavior inflicted on his two year marriage to Callee. Before he left town, a heated argument with Callee ended with him telling her to file for divorce. When Quint runs into Callee at Big Sky Pie, he is stunned to learn their divorce is not yet final. When circumstances throw them together, will Quint convince Callee to give their marriage a second chance?

Quint and Callee are wonderful characters and the chemistry between them is sizzling hot. Quint is definitely the more flawed of the two and at first, his actions paint him a pretty unflattering light. What redeems him for me is his regret over the damage his actions have caused and his ability to admit that he made mistakes. While Quint runs away just when his mom and Callee need him most, the time and distance provides him the opportunity to reflect on his life. He reaches a few startling conclusions about himself and his marriage and Quint is determined to make some long overdue changes to his life when he returns home.

Although Callie is still in love with Quint, she has no intention of reuniting with him. During their separation, she realized that neither she nor their marriage was a priority for Quint. But the most shocking and hurtful realization for Callee is how little she and Quint really know one another.

Callie and Quint’s relationship is definitely uneasy as they set aside their personal problems when they are needed to help launch Big Sky Pie. Callie tries to maintain a physical and emotional distance from Quint, but their simmering passion is pretty hard to resist. Just as their romance heats up, Callie’s doubts soon put their reconciliation in jeopardy.

Fully rounding out Callie and Quint’s story is a warm and loving cast of secondary characters. Although Quint’s father is deceased, his presence is keenly felt and I felt his loss just as deeply as Molly, Quint and Callee. Molly is off screen for much of the novel, but she manages to play a huge role in bringing Quint and Callee together. Supporting both Quint and Callee is their close friend and office manager Andrea Lovette. Will this single mom find love in a future novel? I certainly hope so!

If you are looking a light read that is sweet, sexy and angst free then I highly recommend Delectable. It is a fun first installment in the Big Sky Pie series and Adrianne Lee’s brief but intriguing introductions of Quint’s friend Nick Tanziano and pastry chef Jane Wilson will leave readers eagerly anticipating the release of their book, Delicious, later this year.
